Google Apps for Education (GAFE)
Frequently Asked Questions
As the Mountain View School District prepares its transition to become a Google Apps for Education (GAFE) District, there will be numerous questions that come up by many stakeholders in our District. In order to help us prepare for this transition, I will be sending out these newsletters with tidbits of information to help ease us into this move. If you have any questions, feel free to use the form below and I will respond directly to you, or answer your question in an upcoming newsletter.
What is Google Apps for Education?
Google Apps for Education (GAFE) is a powerful suite of free web-based tools that include Gmail (and Contacts), Calendar, Drive, Classroom, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, Sites, and Hangouts.
Why is our District moving to Google Apps for Education (GAFE)?
GAFE is a really excellent real-time collaboration platform for students, teachers, and staff. It's an easy to use and powerful suite that has many options and features to do powerful tasks. It's accessible from anywhere you have an Internet connection (school, home, smart phone, etc.) and there is no need to install any program on any computer because it works on all platforms (PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Chrome OS). Plus, all these tools are totally free for schools.
Why Google Apps?
What are some of the benefits of our move to Google Apps for Education (GAFE)?
- Staff can collaborate on the same document (lesson plan, grant writing, newsletter).
- Students can work together on group projects.
- Staff can share handouts and forms with students and parents.
- Students can digitally turn in assignments to you which you can grade (or have auto-graded) and comment on before emailing them back their results.
- There are MANY, MANY more benefits, as well.
Where can I go to find out more about Google Apps for Education (GAFE)?
The best place to go is directly to Google. Their Google Apps Learning Center is an excellent resource to find out the basics and even some more advanced features of their numerous Apps.
I heard we are going to change our work email account to a Google Gmail account.
That's correct. Beginning the next school year, our District will become a Google Apps for Education (GAFE) District, so our Microsoft Exchange email account will be switched to a Google Gmail account with the domain, @mtviewschools.net.
If I already have a personal Gmail (Google) account, do I really need another Google account for work?
Yes, you will want one for work. Some of the advantages of having a Google account for education are the added benefits of unlimited Google Drive storage (personal accounts have a 15 GB limit), use of Google Classroom (only available through GAFE accounts), and easily share and collaborate documents with other teachers/staff or students. Plus, if you take advantage of digitally communicating with your parents and students via email, you will not need to share your personal email account.
Do my students need a Google account to use GAFE?
Yes. Beginning the next school year, students will be assigned a Google account through our District in order to participate in Google Apps for Education. Teachers that elect to use the benefits of GAFE with their students, will have their student accounts directly shared with them. The introduction of Google accounts by teachers with their students is optional, as we know that it will take some teachers more time to acclimate themselves with this new move to GAFE.
