SLCS District Update
April 21st, 2022
Superintendent's Update
Greetings SLCS Families and Staff Members,
From time to time guest writers will be sharing stories about the exciting events happening in and around SLCS. The first installment comes from Diane Dobritt, Early Childhood Special Education Teacher.
SLCS Pride!
Steven Archibald
This week, students at the Early Childhood Center (ECC) celebrated Disability Acceptance Week and hosted a Spirit Week to recognize students of all abilities and levels. This is what makes the ECC such an inviting and fun place to learn and play. At the ECC we believe all students deserve to feel welcome and accepted. It is so important that all students know that although we might not be the same, we are still one community. During the week of April 18th - 22nd, our students learned about different disabilities and the importance of not only accepting others, but also accepting themselves. We are all special and unique in our own ways and that is what makes us “Many Bees, One Hive.”
High School Art
Nine artists were selected by their SLHS and East art teachers in combination with the South Lyon Arts Cultural Arts Commission to participate in a community art show. The artists from East are Erin Heuver, Grant Kruger, Maia King, Ace Haynes and Marisa Wray. SLHS artists include Julia Sarrach, Sydnee Belczak, Grace Yarkosky, and Emily Otley-Howard Their work will be displayed throughout the city of South Lyon from May 9th through June 6th. We are so proud of our artists!
Summer Experience
The Special Education Department is excited to offer Summer Experience again this year. The Summer Experience is a five day a week program that operates for three weeks in the summer: June 20-July 8 (NO school on July 4). Any student with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is invited to attend. The half days of instruction will focus on literacy and math skills in addition to social-emotional activities all through a camp style format.
To register your student, complete and submit the appropriate form below before June 1, 2022. Indicate the grade your student will be going into for the 2022-2023 school year. If you have a current 8th-grade student, you will need to register them for the secondary summer experience. If you have questions, please call the Special Education Office 248-573-8220.

Summer Programming-Elementary and Middle School
Due to limited spacing, SLCS will be offering summer enrichment programming for elementary and middle school students by invitation only. This program will run Monday through Thursday mornings, July 18th - August 11th. The elementary program is designed for current kindergarten through fourth grade students. The middle school program is designed for current fifth through eighth grade students. A number of factors will be reviewed to determine which students are eligible to participate, including rate of academic progress. The district will reach out directly to families whose students are eligible to participate.
Summer Programming High School
SLCS will be offering high school credit recovery for our current ninth through eleventh grade students again this summer. Seats will be limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. We will create a waitlist for students who register after all available seats have been filled.
