Overview of Reading A-Z
Peter Afflerbach tells us that "effective portfolios reflect specific curricular and assessment goals in classrooms, schools and school districts. Portfolio assessment is an example of authentic assessment and is characterized by its close relationship with instruction and learning and its ability to provided a detailed account of students' achievement in complex school tasks and performances" (Afflerbach, 2012). I believe that Reading A-Z materials provide a comprehensive and easy way for teachers to begin to build portfolios for their students. The resources make it possible for teachers to provide a student with their reading history, strengths and weaknesses not only in that assessment cycle, but over time as well.
