Fryelands Falcon Flyer
April 22, 2021
From the Principal
Dear Fryelands Families,
This week, on April 21st, we honored our awesome secretaries, Mrs. Baca and Mrs. Cindy, during Administrative Professionals Appreciation Week. These two wonderful ladies come to school with patience and a friendly smile every day to help our students, families, and staff have a great day. We are so grateful and lucky that Mrs. Baca and Mrs. Cindy are such a huge part of our school family.
Happy Earth Day, April 22nd, Fryelands Families!
Did you know that over 30% of the garbage we create in Snohomish County could have been recycled?
Reduce
Where you can, and when safe, walk more instead of using the car. This reduces the gas your parents will use!
Switch off electrical items, such as your lights, television and games console, when you are not using them – this will reduce the amount of energy you use!
Turn off the tap water when brushing your teeth – you’ll reduce the amount of clean water being wasted!
Reuse
When you are heading out to the store, always take your own bags. That way, you won’t use plastic bags from the store.
When something is broken, see if you can mend it or fix it instead of throwing it away!
And if it can’t be mended or fixed, see if you can find a new use for it!
Give unwanted items to charity!
And reuse scrap paper – remember you can always use both sides of a sheet of paper to draw on!
Recycle
By recycling, we are using materials from things you don’t need any more to make new products.
Instead of throwing away your food, you can turn it into really useful compost!
Always see if you can buy things made from recycled materials.
Sort all your trash so that the glass, tin cans, plastic and paper can be recycled.
Think about what other things can be recycled at your local recycling center, like batteries and ink cartridges.
Use kitchen waste as compost in the garden.
Learning in the next 8 weeks...
First of all, we hope you and your family are doing well and are staying healthy. In this unprecedented time, it is important to remember self-care and grace for yourself and for others. We have 8 weeks of in-person and distance learning for your children this school year and we hope to be able to partner with you to help them learn new skills and progress in reading, writing, and math.

Monroe School District COVID-19 Writing Contest
Monroe School District students,
What has school been like during the COVID-19 pandemic? The Monroe community wants to hear from YOU!
Each year, the Monroe School District mails a community newsletter to all homes within the district’s boundaries (see past editions here). That’s over 16,000 mailboxes! The purpose of these newsletters is to share information and positive news about our schools, students and staff with all community members.
This past year of school hasn’t been like any other before and we want to share YOUR first-hand accounts of what it has been like as students in the next edition of our community newsletter. Many of our community members don’t have students in school and are very curious what school has been like for students this past year. Therefore, we are inviting all students to submit a writing piece that may be featured both in the printed newsletter and on our website. At least three entries will be selected, including one from the elementary (K-5), middle (6-8), and high school (9-12) grade levels.
Writing Prompt:
You are living through history. Future historians may look back on the journals, essays and poetry that ordinary people, like you, are creating now to tell the story of life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Imagine 100 years have passed and it’s now the year 2121. Historians are looking back on a piece of your writing that describes what school was like during the pandemic of 2020-21. In an essay, journal entry, poem, news article or any form of creative writing, describe what school has been like for you as a student during the pandemic.
Writing submissions will only be accepted from students who are currently enrolled in the Monroe School District. Submissions must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. Not all submissions will be featured in the community newsletter and/or district website. If you have questions, please email communications@monroe.wednet.edu.

Food Pantry Update
The weekend food pantry bags will be now be coming home on Tuesday's each week.
Thank you to the Sky Valley Food Bank for packing weekend food bags for students at Fryelands. There will be a limited number of Weekend Food Bags, please ask your student to look for them. If you have more than one student attending Fryelands they may each receive a bag. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Jackson, Family Engagement Liaison at: jacksonka@monroe.wednet.edu
Free Meals Continue for ALL Students!
Did you know we are still offering FREE meals for all students, even when they are attending in-person?! Elementary students may take home a free sack lunch at the end of each day they are on campus (A cohort is offered a lunch to take home for that day, B cohort is offered a take home lunch to eat for the next day).
Meals for students in grades 6-12 are a combination of in school service and take-home meals. On the days they attend in-person, students are offered a free sack lunch to be eaten at school. They also have an opportunity to receive free take-home meals at the end of their day, which includes breakfasts and lunches for the days that they will be remote learning.
For those students not attending school in-person, curbside pickup will continue to be available at Hidden River Middle School and Park Place Middle School daily from 11:30-12:00 p.m. through April 21st. We will then transition to providing 5-day meal kits only for those students not attending in-person. More information on pre-ordering these meal kits can be found here.
We know that children learn better when they have had a meal. Please encourage your student to take advantage of the free meals both in school and take-home! We will continue offering free meals through the rest of this school year.
PTA Update
Unfortunately, we have still not received any self-nominations for our Executive Board for the 2021-2022 school year, so we are going to post-pone our April 26th general meeting for the time being. We will have an end of the year meeting in June to approve a preliminary budget for the 2021-2022 school year and to discuss possible ways to recruit people who may want to take on a board position in the fall. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at: fryelandsparents@gmail.com
