Mitch's Memo

Greetings All,

As I write this memo, the bell has just rang and our students have been dismissed for a much needed 5 day break. I hope that during the break you are able to enjoy the time with your children and celebrate the Joy of the season. Spring is a very busy time of year with track, baseball, FFA and academic contests taking place.

By the next time I write to you, the April election will have taken place. As you prepare to go to the polls, I would ask you to consider carefully the information that has been provided in regard to the levy. It is only by working together that we can provide the best education and best educational environment for West Nodaway students.

Go Rockets!

Elementary News

Greetings, Rocket Nation!

Spring is definitely in the air! This is the time of year when we get to watch the earth come back to life with greens and vibrant colors blooming all around us. The warmth of the sun fills us with energy and enthusiasm to be outside. It is my goal to cultivate all of this color and energy into our work here at the school. Our Rocket Team; students, teachers, support staff, parents, and community are an amazing group of people. We are not afraid of hard work or the challenging demands that come our way.

With the evidence of hard work this year before us, we are beginning to see so much progress in our students. (See growth chart below.) Their increased stamina with time on task has created a capacity to accomplish their academic goals and improve their decision-making skills in all areas. I am so proud of them and proud of the way they are treating one another, the way they are setting and meeting goals, the way they are willing to accept responsibility, and the way they are problem-solving, both academically and socially. We all make mistakes and learn to grow through each situation that comes our way. "We grow through what we go through." Learning to deal with adversity can be challenging at times, but being flexible and having a growth mindset has allowed us the opportunity to grow and become better human beings this school year.

It's hard to believe that we are almost through this year! As we finish out the school year with MAP testing, field trips, concerts, and assemblies, I want to encourage us all to carry on with the energy that spring will bring. We need to continue and finish this year strong. To do this, it will take ALL of us helping our wonderful students to be able to show how far they have come. Growth doesn't always come easily, and we appreciate all of your support to the staff as they continue to work in making sure that ALL students are successful.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Barnes

Nurse's News

Big picture

Kids Heart Challenge (Jump Rope for Heart) has wrapped up for our elementary students. We kicked this event off with an assembly lead by our event coordinator, Stephanie Jumps. Mr. Calfee and I join together to have fun stations during PE classes, then students raised money on their own time at home. This program has interactive ways to learn about heart health, and students collected donations for the American Heart Association. Their earned prizes this year are heart hero keychains. Thank you, parents, for your help with this event! We are blown away with our fundraising of $1,534.84 this year!

The 4th grade challenge has begun. We are partnering with Mosaic Life Care in Maryville to provide 4th graders with a fun, interactive and educational program. This program is designed to give young people the skills they need early in life to be healthy and aware of the importance of an active, fit lifestyle. These students are learning about diabetes, obesity, smoking, exercise, stress management and nutrition. The faculty of the program include nurses, doctors, nutritionists and exercise professionals. They come to us on Tuesday afternoons for the activity, then students complete "homework" as well to earn prizes throughout the eight weeks. So far we've participated in an intense healthy vs. unhealthy lifestyle video, relay races to increase our heart rates, oral hygiene, and yoga for relaxation. We are about halfway into this program now.

Current 7th graders and 11th graders were able to get next school year's immunizations here at school on March 18th. Tabitha Frank from the Nodaway County Health Department came in and gave these to those students who were signed up. We had a great turnout. This really helps me plan ahead as well, so thank you for participating! If you are taking your student elsewhere, please remember to get these completed, as they are required prior to the start of the school year, per Missouri state law.

West Nodaway staff members were eligible to sign up and receive their first COVID vaccination with the partnership of Nodaway County Health. We were part of the county schools that participated in a mass event at the Hughes Fieldhouse on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University.

Counselor's Corner

There are so many benefits to being physically active. Spring has arrived and many areas of our life are returning to a degree of normalcy. This makes it easier than ever to find active things to do! The calendar included can be used to challenge yourself to get active in April!

Besides the positive impact physical activity has on our bodies, it also has so many benefits for our mind. The following are true for children, as well as adults. Some of the benefits of physical activity to our mental health include:

  • Improved thinking and cognition (Perfect for state testing time!)
  • Actually grows the brain and helps it make new connections
  • Helps promote improved school attendance
  • Helps improve fine and gross motor coordination
  • Reduced feelings of anxiety and reduces the risk of depression and anxiety
  • Better quality and quantity of sleep
  • Improves mood
  • Boosts self-esteem and positive self-image
  • Minimizes stress
  • Can help to alleviate social withdrawal - especially when the activity is in a group setting
  • Helps prevent memory loss

High School Highlights

The year is coming to a close and the days are flying by. Students have begun meeting with me to decide courses of interest for next school year. A concrete schedule is not in place yet, but students in grades 8-11 will still work on creating and/or updating their I-CAP (Individual Career and Academic Plan), and bring home a course plan that they can go over with parents. If anyone has questions about course options for their child, especially if your child has expressed interest in attending Northwest Technical School or enrolling in Dual Credit courses, please feel free to reach out to chat with me about that.
