Newsletter Term 2 Week 10
St Patrick's School Masterton 5th July 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou,
As always at the end of a term, we find ourselves looking back and wondering where the time has gone. The children have been busy over these last ten weeks involving themselves in events such as cross-country, Samoan language week, kapa haka, sports, and Matariki celebrations to name but a few. As we come to the holiday break it is important that the children enjoy their family time abut also get the rest they need, ready to return for another busy and exciting term.
A reminder to all whanau to please find five minutes to give your thoughts on the proposed idea of changing our St Patrick’s School uniform. Your thoughts can be added to the attached document so that these can be included in any process moving forward: Click on link. More information can also be found further down in the newsletter.
Thank you to those who have already added their thoughts. Having read through this initial feedback I thought it relevant to clarify some of our thinking:
any potential change would have a transition period from one uniform to another eg. 1 year to 18 months
there would be no designated boys or girls' uniforms. We would have one uniform that has the same top half but the bottom half would be the choice of each individual student.
our thinking around removing dresses is based on their lack of suitability for the current schooling climate. These were designed for our school when the majority of learning took place seated at a desk this is now not the case.
A reminder for whanau to please book a slot at our parent/ teacher hui of which the second day is to be held tomorrow, Wednesday 6th July from 1.30 - 6.30pm. On this the normal school timetable will not be running in the afternoon so if you are able we would appreciate you collecting your child at 1.00pm. If you are not able we will be providing supervision, here at school, for your child to be looked after until the normal finishing time of 3pm.
Listed below are key events that are currently planned for term 2:
July 6th - Parent Teacher Hui (1.30 - 6.30)
July 8th - YCC CARITAS Mufti day (gold coin)
July 8th - Final day of Term 2
July 25th - First day of Term 3

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two
10 After this the Lord chose another seventy-two[a] men and sent them out two by two, to go ahead of him to every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 He said to them, “There is a large harvest, but few workers to gather it in. Pray to the owner of the harvest that he will send out workers to gather in his harvest. 3 Go! I am sending you like lambs among wolves. 4 Don't take a purse or a beggar's bag or shoes; don't stop to greet anyone on the road. 5 Whenever you go into a house, first say, ‘Peace be with this house.’ 6 If someone who is peace-loving lives there, let your greeting of peace remain on that person; if not, take back your greeting of peace. 7 Stay in that same house, eating and drinking whatever they offer you, for workers should be given their pay. Don't move around from one house to another. 8 Whenever you go into a town and are made welcome, eat what is set before you, 9 heal the sick in that town, and say to the people there, ‘The Kingdom of God has come near you.’ 10 But whenever you go into a town and are not welcomed, go out in the streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust from your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. But remember that the Kingdom of God has come near you!’ 12 I assure you that on the Judgment Day God will show more mercy to Sodom than to that town!

School Painter - Wanted
As a school we are in need of finding a new painting contractor to take over the annual painting contract for our school. We will be approaching a number of local businesses but we also wanted to check if there are any painters within our community that would be interested in this opportunity. If this is you please contact the school office to make an apppoointment to meet with Steve Wheeler (Principal).

New School Uniform Proposal
Over recent months discussions at school have taken place about the potential of changing our current school uniform. As part of this process, we are looking for feedback from our school stakeholders - students, staff, and parents/ whanau. We are looking to find out if this is something that is supported by our community and if so, what could this then look like.
An important part of this conversation is ‘why would we do this?’ Our thinking is based on the following reasons:
this is an opportunity to modernise and rebrand the uniform
our current girls' uniform is not suitable for how children now learn
we can create a uniform that has options and is not limited by gender/ culture
potentially cheaper costs when compared to the current girls' uniform especially
To aid your thinking attached below (click on this link) are:
a recent document from NZ Human Rights Commission about school uniforms from a human rights and Te Tiriti O Waitangi perspective.
a draft storyboard from NZ uniforms of some potential ideas of what our uniform could be. This shows a range of potential uniform items with the top half being for everyone and then each student choosing what bottom half they want to wear to go with it.
Please understand that these are just some initial thoughts. Please add your thoughts to this document so that these can be included in any process moving forward: Click on link

With only a few to go, millions of people around the world are getting ready for Plastic Free July. When lots of people make small changes, together we can make a real difference, and there are so many changes to try! Here are a few ideas you could try with your whanau.
“Toitū te marae a Tāne-Mahuta, toitū te marae a Tangaroa, toitū te tangata.”
“If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive.”
