Superintendent Update - February 1, 2021
Covid-19 Vaccine Update
I encourage everyone in our community to get vaccinated when it becomes possible to do so.
For current information about who can receive the vaccine, and where the vaccine is being administered, please visit the Los Angeles Department of Public Health vaccination website. While the supplies have been limited, and the vaccine is not yet available to children under the age of 16, the vaccines will help us make progress toward protecting ourselves and each other from the virus.
Please take a moment to read the Covid-19 Vaccine Information and FAQs linked below, which is available in English and Spanish.
Thursday, February 4 @ 5:30 PM
LACOE’s Reading/Language Arts expert Leslie Zoroya has created a new module for teaching Black History Month in a meaningful and culturally respectful way. Registration is now open for this module, Black History Month and Beyond: Creating an Inclusive, Culturally Responsive RLA Classroom. Dr. Kathryn Edwards, Director of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity at LACOE, has compiled resources to help teachers widen their exploration of Black lives while also providing historical context so students can connect lessons to current issues.

Learn About Alternative Dispute Resolution
The field of education is filled with technical terms, detailed reports, and federal guidelines. However, one of the major components that isn’t discussed is the relationship between the family and the school in their effort to best serve the student. However, there are bound to be moments when the district and family do not see eye-to-eye.
In those moments, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) may be appropriate. ADR is a service that the SELPA provides to individuals, giving them an opportunity to resolve disagreements in a safe, positive, and efficient manner. This presentation will outline the ADR services and fill you in on how the SELPA can help during IEP meetings.
To RSVP, please email Crystal Lopez at Crystal_Lopez@swselpa.org and you will receive a zoom link to connect to the meeting.
