Student and Staff Celebrations
- Congratulations to Jessie Norton for being selected as Naples High School HOBY Ambassador for 2019. What is HOBY?
Founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. HOBY provides students, for whom most are selected by their schools, the opportunity to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning, and motivation-building experiences, beginning a lifelong dedication to improving the lives of others. Due to the selfless efforts of volunteers and the contributions of generous donors, more than 10,000 students participate in HOBY programs annually. This is an incredible honor for an incredible young woman! - On 11/30, during a Big Green game against Campbell Savona, Autumn Kunes scored 37 points to break the school record for most points in a game by a female basketball player at #naplescsd. On 12/6, Autumn broke her own record by scoring 41 points against Dundee. Congrats Autumn! @MPN_bchavez

National Honor Society Food Drive:
In November, the National Honor Society ran a food drive in both the elementary and high school to collect items for the Naples Open Cupboard. A truckload of goods was delivered on Monday, November 19th, just before Thanksgiving. The elementary may have won the Golden Turkey award again this year, but there was a much better showing be the high school students. Thank you to the Naples community for their generosity.

CAD Program Collaborates with FIRST Robotics Team 1551
Mr. Ayers and Mr. Freivald are collaborating to enhance the CAD program into a CAD/CAM program, where FIRST Robotics Team 1551 will serve as a “customer” for products created by the CAD class(es). Using the new technologies—the Markforged Onyx One 3D printer purchased by the robotics program, and the Tormach PCNC 770 mill in the technology department—the robotics team has been and will be specifying parts for production such as 3D-printed brackets and CNC-pocketed aluminum box tubing or aluminum plate.
The robotics team, as the customer, provides the specifications to the students in the CAD classes. The students then produce either the digital files (for 3D printing) or the physical part (for the CNC mill) to the team. At that point, the team assesses the part for suitability—whether or not it meets spec, both in terms of the CAD classes’ work, and whether or not the designed/produced part works as intended—and then either approves it for use on the robot(s) or sends modified requirements back to the CAD/CAM class for revision/reproduction.
In this manner, the robotics team and the CAD class gain experience collaborating on real-world projects toward a common goal, developing skills not only in design but in communication, assessment, and feedback.

Naples High School Course: Studio Art
Mr. Frazer's students in Studio Art have been travelling through the language of art. In their journey they have been exploring the many elements and principles of art and how they can be manipulated to allow for human expression and thought. Most recently the students have been challenged to combine line, shape, color, value and texture in an original and dynamic abstract composition. Studying how Rhythm, Balance and Movement may be obtained through creative manipulation of elements along with learning acrylic painting techniques. Each student has unique ideas; the work on display represents their efforts in this challenge. The art elements are the notes and the students have written their own songs, expressing their own creative potential in their journey to find, through art, their own voice.

Children at War Seminar, Facilitated by Mrs. Weller, Mrs. Betrus and Mr. Gilzow
Recently in English 8, students read novels centered around the theme of "Children at War." Questions students needed to consider during this unit included:
*When teenagers find themselves in the middle of a war, what do they do?
*How do they stay resilient?
*What kinds of difficult choices must they make?
*How do these ficitional experiences relate to what teens experience in real-life?
What better way to ponder and answer these difficult questions than by providing an authentic audience to present their findings to? Enter NCS staff members, who took time out of their busy days to listen to, evaluate, and provide meaningful feedback to students about their novels and arguments. During this two-day seminar, groups of one to two students per book presented their cases and were evaluated by staff members, including Mrs. Ashton, Mrs. Clark, Ms. Steenburgh, Mr. Frahm, and several high school academic leaders. Students were able to show what they learned and apply all facets of the ELA standards--reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
