Superintendent's Update
Dear Families,
Just over a year ago my newsletter announced that students would return for 5 days of in-person learning from the hybrid model. How far we've come since last March. Today, when you walk through our schools or view the school calendars, they are full of activities, events and competitions. Below are just a few of the many activities and student accomplishments that have taken place over the past few weeks.
- The Mansfield High School Math Team placed 4th in the Southeastern Massachusetts Mathematics League this season. This is the highest they have placed in several years.
- The MHS Quiz Show Team has advanced to the next bracket and will compete against Shrewsbury on April 23.
- MHS Percussion took 4th place in a regional competition and MHS Cheer earned a bronze medal in their first ever trip to a national championship.
- The MHS Performing Arts department presented a live, in-person performance by the QMS & MHS choirs followed by a performance of the MHS student-directed one-act play, Our Place by Terry Gabbard.
- QMS parents attended an in-person presentation at MHS for incoming 9th-grade students.
- After a two year hiatus, 5th-grade students performed A Big Bad Musical the weekend of March 19.
- Robinson students invited family members and district leaders to participate in their read-a-thon celebrating Read Across America Week.
- MESA book fairs at Robinson and Jordan/Jackson for students and families have returned.
In addition, plans are underway for elementary field days, 5th-grade move up, 8th-grade celebration, and of course the Class of 2022 graduation and end-of-year activities including Prom. The Class of 2022 Graduation will be held on Tuesday, May 31 at the Xfinity Center for Performing Arts.
We remain mindful of COVID positivity and transmission rates, continue to follow DESE/DPH guidance, promote an environment for all students and staff to feel safe and comfortable, and continue to follow protocols to keep our buildings clean. Our COVID Website remains active and our dashboard is updated weekly. In addition, over 1,700 students and staff participate in our voluntary, weekly at-home COVID testing.
Sincerely,
Teresa Murphy
Superintendent
Mansfield High School Welcome New Principal
Looking ahead to the 2022-2023 school year, the district recently conducted a search for the Mansfield High School Principal position. I am pleased to announce that Mr. Russ Booth has accepted the position. Currently an assistant principal at North Attleboro High School, Mr. Booth is a former high school mathematics teacher and department chair. Having worked in three school districts and a charter school provides him with a unique lens to lead MHS. He, his wife and three young children make their home in Mansfield. As a parent of Robinson School students, Mr. Booth serves on the 2021-2022 Robinson School Council. He will begin on July 1, 2022.
School Nutrition Information for 2022-2023
What does this mean for your family?
- Starting September 6, 2022, students will be able to purchase breakfast and lunch for a fee (similar to pre-COVID)
- Free and Reduced Lunch will be available to students whose family qualifies for the program
We will provide more information as we receive it; however, we wanted to inform families of this information as soon as possible as households will have to re-adjust to meal charges after such a long time not having to focus on it.
Please note that this is not a local decision. Congress recently passed an appropriations package that did not include language allowing the USDA to extend the current child nutrition waivers past June 30, 2022. The State of Massachusetts may provide future guidance and we will publish information as we receive it.
Please contact our Food Services Department at 508-261-7540 x33124 with any questions.
Mansfield Public Schools Offers School Choice for Grades 9 and 10
The School Committee voted to begin participation in the Massachusetts Interdistrict School Choice program. School Choice allows non-resident students to attend Mansfield Public Schools. School Choice brings resources as well as students to the district.
We analyzed student enrollment to determine the grades that would warrant additional student enrollment. For example, last year MHS graduation 320 students but next year, we anticipate only approximately 240 students to enter grade 9. For next fall we have opened 100 seats between grade 9 and 10. We currently have 4 students wishing to choice in to MHS.
School Choice is a positive revenue option that will eventually allow us to continue to provide the wide variety of academic programming along with the plethora of extracurricular, athletic and performing arts opportunities to students.
