What A Busy September!
We are in the full swing of application season for incoming 9th graders (Class of 2028). I have appreciated all of our parent and student volunteers! We had approximately 350 parents and students at our information night on 9/25 and additionally about 250 parents and students at our information night on 9/27. Families are excited for the opportunities that AST has to offer and excited to join us in the fall! To update you, we have moved the entire application online and we are very excited for the application and testing dates that are just around our corner. If you have friends, neighbors, or family members who are considering applying to AST, please point them in the direction of the website as it's been updated to reflect this application cycle.

Great Reads For Parents
There are tons of books that focus on everything from how to raise successful students, how to manage G/T learners, and so many on college admissions that it is completely overwhelming! I've read a lot of them! I wanted to take a few minutes and share some great reads for parents!
Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth
Here is a TedTalk about the ideas presented in her book. This is a great read about how students need to learn to persevere..not just in the classroom, but how important it is to build it in life. The most successful students are those who have grit. Our kids are so smart, and so amazing...but in order for them to be their most successful selves, they must have more grit. Learning to run into obstacles, make choices, and gain perspectives on our problems are important life skills.
Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be by Frank Bruni
Of all the books I read as a college and career counselor, this is my favorite. It is a fantastic read on college admissions and how truly flawed the system of admissions is. Additionally, it broaches the subject of anxiety in admissions, what the root of it is, and what we need to do as adults to combat that.
The Gatekeepers: Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College by Jacques Steinberg
Another must read for any parent who wants their student at an elite college, this eye opening book is 20 years old but still 100% relevant. This was the first book I read about college admissions and it is so very accurate. This book follows several real students through the process of admissions and will open you eyes and break your heart a little.
College Spotlight-Trinity University
If small schools with amazing STEM programs appeal to you, check out Trinity University in San Antonio. We have several AST alumni who have gone on to attend Trinity after graduation, and rave about the professors, opportunities, and living in San Antonio. You'd be hard pressed to find many places in the US where you have state of the art medical facilities (Brooke Army Medical Center) and 300 year old architectural structures (The Alamo). And if you're a parent visiting your student--San Antonio has a million things to do and phenomenal places to eat!! The appeal of a large urban area mixed with small classes and wonderful professors--Trinity is a fantastic fit for our students.
I had the opportunity to tour their campus not to long ago, and met with several professors who are so excited to work with students in small groups. Many of our students who attend Trinity are Pre-Med-which boasts a 90% acceptance rate into med school. You can read specifically about that program here. Some of our other students who have attended have gone on to law school and the corporate world. Check out Trinity if you have a chance! Our college rep for Trinity is Gail Roberson--and is a fantastic ambassador for all of their programs.
