Selby Star
November 8, 2019
Dear Selby Families,
Another great week has come and gone and we handled not only the time-change, but the first dumping of snow as well! The kids loved it!
We have had several children with head lice - please check your child(ren) regularly and treat as required. Even if you have treated, please keep checking.
As the weather changes, and the possibility of inclement weather days increases, I am asking that even if buses are NOT running you still use safe arrival to indicate your child's absence if they will not be coming to school. This is for safety reasons so we know they have not been dropped off at the door, walked on their own and not made it etc.
If any of your personal information (email address, cell phone # etc) has changed, please come in or call the school to update it.
Thank you to all of the families that made it to the Leons Centre to see some of our students sing the National Anthem. They did an amazing job and made us so proud. Thank you also to Mr. Scott for his time organizing and prepping our choir.
Have a great weekend,
K. Witley
Principal
November is INDIGENOUS EDUCATION MONTH
Kwey kwey, She:kon, Taanshi, Greetings, (pronounced Kway, kway, Say go, Tawn shee)
The Limestone Distict School Board area is home to over 7000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. It is the traditional homeland of the Anishinaabe (pronounced Ah nish nah bay) and the Haudenosaunee (pronounced Ho den oh show nay). It is also home to Métis, Inuit and First Nations peoples from across Canada. We believe that all students should have an understanding of the distinct cultures, traditions, and histories of First Nations, Métis and Inuit and we highlight this throughout the month of November during Indigenous Education Month, as well as embedding this throughout our year. Throughout this month we will be sharing announcements and using a variety of resources in classrooms that will teach students about the Indigenous people of this area. We are collaborating with local Knowledge Keepers to help guide our learning around the Haudenosaunee land on which Southview Public School is built on. As we move forward in our Call to Action, we hope to embrace a whole school approach to "Positive Mind, Peace, and Inner Peace" as we learn more about the land on which we live, work, and play.
