Resources for Talking with Teens
Office of Adolescent Health
What you have to say to and with your teen matters! The Office of Adolescent Health has put together this website with conversation tools, fact sheets, and more to help you understand and talk with your teen. http://www.hhs.gov/ash/oah/resources-and-publications/info/parents/
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
SAMHSA has created free mobile apps for parents regarding substance abuse prevention, bullying prevention, emergency responses to traumatic events, and suicide prevention. Their website also has many resources regarding these and other mental health concerns. http://store.samhsa.gov/apps/?WT.mc_id=EB_20160105_OSAS_NAHNWebinar
Dealing with the Winter Blues
We all may feel a little down in the winter, especially after the holidays. This Child Mind Institute article can help you respond to your tween/ teen if they express feeling down or seem to be experiencing sadness, even if it may not be the type of depression that needs clinical attention. http://www.childmind.org/en/posts/articles/2015-1-13-how-help-your-depressed-teenager
If you are concerned that your teen may be experiencing more severe sadness, may have been exposed to suicidal thinking through social media or peers, or may be in danger of harming themselves, please watch this video provided by the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide. This site also provides parents with fact sheets, responses and resources.
