Honor Then and Now
Why do the characters in "Life Is a Dream" do what they do?
Rosaura and Astolfo
Rosaura feels it would dishonor her if Astolfo breaks his promise to marry her.
Today, we would say the person who breaks the promise is the one who loses honor, not the person who was given the promise.
Segismundo and the Soldier
Segismundo learns to behave with honor at all times. Yet, he punishes the Soldier who helped him rebel against his father the King.
Today, we might think rewarding the Soldier would show honor.
Look at these pictures. How do they each relate to the idea of Honor? How does each one relate to an idea of Honor in "Life Is a Dream" AND how does each one relate to an idea of Honor today? What are the differences?
