Fulton Science Academy
ACCREDITED AND STEM CERTIFIED COLLEGE PREP GIFTED SCHOOL
Week of February 3, 2020
I hope that everyone enjoyed their weekend!
I want to begin by saying that our school has been recognized as a 2020 Emerging School of Character by character.org! Character.org "...has validated and certified character initiatives in schools across the country and internationally through the 11 Principles of Effective Character. We have provided the voice, visibility and resources for educators to build and sustain stronger communities." (https://www.character.org/who-we-are/) Make sure to visit their website to learn more about them! Now on the way to being a State Certified School of Character!
I'd like to point out the amazing achievement that our Robotics team was a part of this past weekend. The FSA Robotics teams completed the 2019-2020 Robotics season this past weekend. During this regular season completion, our 8th grade team made school history with their first 1st place Championship Award and will represent the State of Georgia in the Global Challenge in Houston, TX! Our 7th grade team came home with the 3rd place Championship Award as well! We look forward to Globals and wish you all the best of luck!
Lastly, if you have not yet re-enrolled and intend to, don't forget that the deadline is THIS WEDNESDAY, February 5th! FSA’s annual International Night will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2020 from 2:00-5:00 PM! We take pride in the cultural diversity represented in our school, and our International Night is a great way to share and celebrate our various cultural traditions. Please read carefully because we need your help to make it possible!
The event this year will be the same format as last year, but adding a bazaar to help raise money for the athletic field. We are recruiting families to contribute in various ways. Whether you would like to represent your country of origin or share what you’ve learned about other places while traveling abroad, we would be honored if you would share your experiences and insight with the FSA family. The opportunities to contribute include the following:
- Manage a booth - This includes selecting a country to educate our families on the country and culture. You will be provided with tables and a tri-fold poster board to create a display showcasing your country’s heritage including relevant art, photos, traditional dress/costume, music, dance, food, souvenirs, games, etc. If more than one family volunteers to represent the same country, those families will collaborate to manage the booth. Any family managing a booth has an opportunity to be in the Parade of Nations. Details will follow once signed up.
- Bring food and/or drink items indicative of a specific country - If you aren’t up for managing a booth, but are a good cook and want to share your culinary talents, please let us know what items you would like to contribute for our food sampling.
Perform a talent representative of a country - Performances can be by our students, parents and/or others in the community. Examples include Irish or Indian dance, West African drumming, Capoeira, Salsa dance, singing, etc. Please note performances should be 3-5 minutes long.
- Sell items at the International Night’s first ever Bazaar! - The vendors will only be adults. There will be a $40 table reservation fee to support the athletic field. You will have to provide your own 6 ft. table. Participants can sell clothes, jewelry, accessories, artwork, etc. Please note food items are not permitted. These will be reserved on a first come first served basis, so hurry and reserve your table today!
- General Assistance & Volunteering - If none of the above appeal to you, but you would like to help at the event, please sign up to serve as a general event volunteer. We also need help with set up and clean up, manning the passport and immigration booths, coordinating talent, and more.
Please click the link below to let us know how you would like to participate by February 29th.
Note: You may volunteer for more than one event! Once we receive your Google Form response, we will reach out to you with additional details.

FSA Holds 17th Annual School-Wide National Geographic Geography Bee
The FSAPS Social Studies Department held its 17th annual school-wide National Geographic Geography Bee on Tuesday, January 28th. We had a number of qualifiers for the Bee representing students in the 4th through 8th grades, which moved through several preliminary rounds before settling on our finalists.
The championship round was the most heated, taking several tense turns before 8th grader Weston B. eventually prevailed over the other competitors.
Weston cruised through the preliminary and championship rounds, facing off against fellow 4th grader Raghav P. and 7th grader Akram H. in the final round. In the finals, Weston claimed victory with his knowledge of the United Kingdom’s overseas territory of Ascension Island.
Weston will complete a qualifying test for the chance to represent FSAPS in the state Geography Bee this March 27th and potentially to the national championship in Washington DC in May.
Thanks again to all of our competitors and good luck to Weston!
1st Place: Weston B. (8th grade)
2nd Place: Akram H. (7th grade)
3rd Place: Raghav P. (4th grade)

The FSA Middle School Drama Club Presents, Nice Girl
Poetry Out Loud 2020
On Wednesday, January 29th, FSA students participated in Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation competition. Students selected two poems from the Poetry Out Loud anthology to memorize and recite on the day of the competition. A panel of judges will scored each student on physical presence, voice, articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding, and overall performance. Our very own anchor Akshay Maharaj placed third, Aubrey Lassetter placed second, and Dongjoon Jeong placed first.
".... I had the honor to attend the Fulton Science Academy Private School Poetry Out Loud Competition as a judge. It was amazing to sit at the judge's panel with award winning journalist Derek Prall and the Academy's esteem educators!Watching those young people stand before their peers to perform their recitations was something special to behold! It was a high honor to stand and address them and their families! I dared not take that responsibility lightly!I salute the winners of the competition and all the students that participated fearlessly! I would also like to thank Ms. Kelley Outler the wonderful hospitality and providing this opportunity for us all!The winner of the evening ask me to put my address in a place where he could read it again and share with his family! This is for him and all the other young poets in the room! Congratulations" - Teresa K. Page

MS Junior Beta visits Inspired Living Senior Living Home
On Jan 30th, Middle School Junior Beta went to Inspired Living Senior Living Home. In preparation for the visit, Junior Beta collected items to donate and distribute, such as activity books, blankets, toiletries, and even stuffed animals. They went with their donations and food and drink items. Several students performed. Brooke Staples and Marina Chen performed a dance. Khalil Lindo and Isra Hussain performed their poems that they had prepared for Poetry Out Loud just the day before. Annemarie Adefisan and Shadi Karifard performed individual musical pieces. Around the performances, there was lots of mingling between the students and the seniors. The students loved hearing stories about their pasts, and the seniors loved having a youthful presence and reminder of their grandchildren.
