BACK TO SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
I am excited to welcome you back for another school year at Lakeville South High School. I hope that you all had a nice relaxing summer break with friends and family. Please read through this newsletter for important information regarding the upcoming school year. I look forward to seeing all our Cougars on September 5th!
Take care,
Principal Shaun Murphy
New Start Time and Cougar Time
In an effort to have an even start time our first hour classes will now begin at 8:00 am instead of 8:02am as in years past.
Also, we are now having an altered schedule on Tuesday and Thursdays in an effort to better our communication and improve our student connectedness to the building. We will continue to have Academic Seminar on Thursdays as we have in the past, but we have added an Advisory period, called Cougar Time, on Tuesdays where students will be assigned to a teacher for the entire school year. During Cougar Time students will get important school announcements, work on college and career readiness, and have time for social and emotional wellness activities.

Schedule Change Requests
The only ACCEPTABLE educational reasons for a schedule change are:
● Seniors who need a course to fulfill a graduation requirement
● An inappropriate level or sequence placement
(i.e. Spanish 3 not 2, AP/Honors to a General Course)
● An obvious error in schedule (i.e. same class twice)
● Prerequisites that have not been fulfilled
● Would like to opt-in to a higher level/ more rigorous version of their current course
(i.e. General Course to AP/Honors)
Schedule changes WILL NOT be made for these reasons:
● Specific teacher request
● Switch sections of the same course to get a different teacher
● Requested change would exceed class size capacity
● Student changed his/her mind
● Desire to have a certain lunch schedule
● Desire to be with friends
● Desire to have a class at a certain time of the day
As a reminder, students must keep a minimum of 6 classes as a freshman, sophomore, and junior and a minimum of 5 classes as seniors.
Thank you,
LSHS Administration

What is the Parent Portal?
Infinite Campus is available for students and parents/guardians. As a supporter of your child’s education, it is important that you have your own Parent Portal account so you can better understand, monitor and participate in the educational process with real-time access to your student’s information, including:
Assignments
Attendance
Bus routes
Fees for transportation, activities, band, student parking, AP exams, yearbooks, etc.
Report Cards
Schedules
The Parent Portal is also where you can find the latest district and school announcements and select your preferences for receiving email communications from your child’s school.
How do I get an account?
Infinite Campus Parent Portal accounts are set up for parents/guardians when you enroll in any school in the district.
If you recently enrolled, look for an automated email from messenger@isd194.org, sent within a few days of when you enrolled your student(s). Follow the Parent Portal access instructions in the email.
I’m not sure if I have an account
If you have not set up an account, please contact the school office where one of your children attends to set up a time to show your ID and receive your instructions in person. You can also send a picture, scan or fax of your photo ID to sissupport@isd194.org, and instructions will be emailed back to you.
I forgot my username or password
Usernames and passwords can be set or changed using the Forgot Username or Forgot Password option at the Infinite Campus Parent Portal login page, without needing to contact support. If you are still having difficulty logging in, please request assistance by emailing SISsupport@isd194.org.

Growing Together
On Nov. 7, Lakeville Area School district residents will vote whether to approve funding to staff and operate Highview Elementary, the new elementary school opening Fall 2024. The request also includes attracting and retaining staff, and adding K-12 mental health and academic support.
The referendum request is in response to continued student and community growth, putting pressure on existing elementary school space, and to foster academic excellence for our growing K-12 students.
Crisis Hotline Information: New Statutory Requirement for Grades 6-12
Crisis Hotline Information: New Statutory Requirement for Grades 6-12
Recently, the state legislature passed a new statute, Minn. Stat. § 121A.35, which mandates that all identification badges and student handbooks/planners for students in grades 6-12 include required crisis hotline information. The purpose of this state legislation is to ensure that communities are equipped with resources to support and help children who are in distress.
Starting this school year, all secondary student identification cards will now have the following required crisis hotline information displayed on the front. An example ID is included:
National Suicide and Crisis LifeLine: 988
Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741
Dakota County Crisis Hotline: 952-891-7171 (calls will be routed accordingly if you reside in Scott County)
We believe that open communication between parents/guardians, school staff, and students is crucial in fostering a safe and nurturing school community. We understand the sensitivity of this legislation and want to be sure you are aware of this new state statute and the school district’s compliance.
In addition to the crisis information noted on the ID to support students after school hours, we highly encourage students and families to connect with our school’s student support specialist to access school-based mental health support and services during school hours as needed.

PSAT-Saturday, October 14th 8:00 am
This is an optional test for juniors wanting to qualify for National Merit status and sophomores/juniors seeking practice for college entrance exams. Only juniors and sophomores may take the exam.
Questions? Contact Amy.Juaire@isd194.org or 952-232-3489.
The PSAT measures: critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, & writing skills. Students have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. This test does not require students to recall specific facts from classes.
Who and why should students take this test?
- Sophomore or junior looking for a practice exam with feedback
- Receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses of skills necessary for college study. Students can then focus their preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
- See how the performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
- Enter the competition for scholarships from National Merit (grade 11 only).
- Help prepare for the SAT. Students become familiar with the questions and the exact directions they will see on the SAT.
- Receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.
Visit the Official College Board Student Guide for practice:
https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10
Register on the Campus School Store for the PSAT Exam at Lakeville South, Saturday, October 14th, 8:00 am. The Cost is $35.00 and registration will be open until October 6th.
The test is optional and offered to sophomores and juniors.
The PSAT/NMSQT is a 2-hour and 45-minute test that measures skills in evidence-based reading and writing and mathematics that are important for success in college and can qualify juniors for National Merit Scholarships! Scores are also used to gauge readiness for PSEO opportunities.
