EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER October 31, 2016
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Wow! It's been another incredible week at Fulton Science Academy Private School, where our students enjoy being smart, but think with their hearts... a true recipe for success!
This morning, FSAPS had the pleasure of hosting John Copenhaver, a former regional director of FEMA who is now CEO of Contingency Management Group, Inc., a consulting firm that designs crisis management programs that blend operational business continuity with the tactical emergency response.
Mr. Copenhaver visited our campus to meet with FSA Science Chair, Mr. Shealy, as well as myself and our Advancement Director, Mrs. Bowman, to discuss a new invention his company is supporting called, "Tornado Alert." This device, which provides revolutionary detection technology, is a scientific breakthrough based upon more than 40 years of scientific research. Our school (including students) will continue our dialogue with Mr. Copenhaver and his team of inventors as they make product revisions, etc. It was a wonderful beginning to what we believe will become a lasting and collaborative relationship.
CAMPUS EXPANSION UPDATE
I am pleased to inform our families that we are now beginning the process of determining the interior needs of our campus expansion. Just like we have met and discussed our campus expansion master plan with our school community, there will also be meetings with students, faculty, and parents about the interior needs of the expansion. Examples include a sound, video editing and recording studio, additional science, and computer laboratories, classes for academic teams, Genius Labs, additional art and music rooms, etc. It will be an exciting process for all of us!
ENROLLMENT SEASON FOR 2016 – 2017 SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS ON NOVEMBER 1ST
The enrollment of new students for the 2017 – 2018 school year begins tomorrow, November 1. Re-enrollment for our current students will occur during the month of January. Therefore, our current families do not need to do anything until January unless they have a sibling who is not currently a student at FSA. If your family has a sibling to register, please apply using the link below. We want to make sure any available admission spots are given to siblings of our current families before they are offered to new families.

First Graders Explore More about the Voting Process the Sweet Way...Through Cookies!
Before students took their vote, they discussed what they already knew about each cookie. Then, they made a pros and cons list about each type of cookie as they learned about the importance of making informed decisions in the voting process. Next, students took turns representing each cookie and tried to use their facts to persuade students about why their cookie was the best. Finally, students took a secret vote, tallied and graphed the results.
The winner was the frosted cookie! It was a fun, meaningful way to learn about the voting process and prepare for the mock presidential election on Tuesday.
Fall Food Drive Commences to Support “Blessings in a Backpack”
The FSA Service Learning Clubs announced a wonderful partnership with Blessings in a Backpack, a local nonprofit that aims to curb childhood hunger by providing food to at-risk children in our community.
Between now and the end of this semester, FSA students will be asked to donate individual, serving-sized, non-perishable items in their homerooms to help fight childhood hunger in our local community. Collections will continue from November 1 through December 6.
Partnering with “Blessings in a Backpack,” a local non-profit organization, FSAPS Service Learning Club members will collect items that will be sent home in personalized bags with school children in the north Atlanta metro area. Our representative will pick up donations weekly and deliver them to the schools served by the program. Our goal is to help supply nutritious food to children in need and help them to feel strong and ready to learn.
The statistics about childhood hunger are alarming! One in seven people in the metro-Atlanta area turns to food banks to help feed themselves and their families. Many families do not have the means to provide for their basic food needs. In fact, more than 164,000 children in the metro Atlanta area are afflicted by this reality.
FSAPS wants to help because #fsacares! We hope you will please help us make this campaign successful!
Grade level homerooms have been assigned specific products from the organization’s wish list of foods to help the children. Items include:
- Pre K – K : Fruit Cups/Canned Chicken Soup (individual servings)
- Grade 1: Canned Vegetables/Clementines/WOW Butter (Horizon product) (individual servings)
- Grade 2: Mac and Cheese Cups/Canned Pastas – like Ravioli, Spaghetti and others (individual servings)
- Grade 3: Pudding Cups/ Apple Sauce Cups/Grits and Mashed Potatoes (individual servings)
- Grade 4: Granola Bars/Mixed Fruit Bars/Apples (individually packaged)
- Grade 5: Canned Tuna/Canned Vienna Sausages/ Fruit Gummies(individually packaged)
- Grade 6: Pretzels/Cheezits Snack Foods/Pop Tarts (individually packaged)
- Grade 7: Popcorn/Rice Krispie Treats/ Individual Rice Packets (individually packaged)
- Grades 8: Cookies/Raisins/Individually wrapped baked goods – like Muffins (individually packaged)
- Grade 9-10: Single serving shelf stable milk (made by Horizon)/Single serve Breakfast Cereals/ Oatmeal Packets (individually packaged)
Please send in your donated items, as often as you wish, between now and December 6. Donation drop zones have been set up in the front lobby for lower grades and the cafeteria for upper grades. Service learning club members will be responsible for collecting and recording donations.
To engender a friendly spirit of competition between the grade levels, the winning grade will receive a reward at the conclusion of the campaign.
We thank each and every one of you in advance for your generous spirit. Thank you for helping us be a part of the solution to childhood hunger.

New Materials Arrive to Show FSA Pride
November's Character Education Theme is "Respect"
Respect is:
1. Showing consideration for other people and their property.
2. Caring for ourselves, family, community, and school.
3. Appreciating and accepting individual differences.
4. Treating others the way that you would want to be treated.
How can we incorporate this theme throughout our school and our families this month?
- We can encourage students to use kind words to one another, have good manners, and to be sensitive to other's feelings.
- We can invite children to listen to what others have to say and to value someone's opinion, even if it's different than your own.
- We can learn to appreciate differences among people and value someone's likes and dislikes.
- We can help to care for other peoples' property, enjoy helping others and avoid negative behaviors such as mocking, teasing, or talking about someone behind their backs.
Updates from the Mustang Support Organization
Parent Seminar
Does your teen have the organization, time management & planning skills that are necessary to succeed in middle school, high school, college & beyond?
Does your child…
- Procrastinate on important projects?
- Lose track of time or forget deadlines?
- Have difficulty maintaining focus and motivation?
- Have trouble staying organized?
This may be a sign that your student has poorly developed executive skills. Students’ executive skills can have a major impact on their performance in high school, college, and beyond. However, it can be very difficult for students to change these behaviors on their own, and most schools provide little guidance in how to develop these critical life skills.
Parents, please join us on November 15 at 6pm for a presentation by Dr. Maggie Wray, Ph.D.
Dr. Wray will give ideas, tips, and tools families can use at home to improve their kids' ability to manage time effectively, stay organized, and balance their busy schedule of challenging classes and demanding extracurricular activities.

Door Decorating Contest Winners Announced
In less than five days, thousands of votes were cast for a variety of incredibly creative doors. We would like to congratulate every participating teacher and their students for such creative ideas, as photos have traveled around the world and inspired other schools and learning centers. Great job!
Hillcrest Orchards Field Trip
Students in grades 1-3 enjoyed a beautiful day at the apple orchards in Ellijay, Georgia, on Wednesday, October 26. Students took a long (but very exciting) bus ride to North Georgia to visit Hillcrest Orchards! Participants were very lucky to have some wonderful fall weather to enjoy the outdoors for the day.
On the trip, students were able to see what farm life is all about. Classes rotated through the different stations and experienced a variety of activities. Each student enjoyed a yummy cup of fresh apple cider, learned about how to feed cows, practiced taking kernels off ears of corn for the cows to eat, practiced and ACTUALLY milked a real cow named "Buttercup," learned about cows and bulls, visited an apple museum, and learned about how apples should be picked the correct way.
Soon after, students enjoyed a wagon ride through a nature trail, came face to face with farm animals in a petting zoo, ate a picnic lunch, zoomed down an extra fun slide, and last (but certainly not least) enjoyed some fun and FAST pig races to end our adventure!
Fourth and Fifth Grade Go Wild at Zoo Atlanta!
The fourth and fifth grade classes had a wildly good time during their Atlanta Zoo field trip on Friday, October 28. Students participated in Classification Quiz Game Show seminar, during which they learned all about different types of animals and how they are classified. The students split up and competed against one another in groups, with the final result being a tie! During this time, they also met two special guests up close and personal: a skink that carries eggs during development and then gives birth to live young and a tortoise that the students all got to touch.
After the quiz show, students had a picnic-style lunch and took a train ride around the zoo's CandyLand setup. Finally, students separated into small groups and toured the zoo to visit all of the different animals. Thank you to all of the chaperones who helped make it a fun, educational, and successful field trip!

OWL PELLETS – 4th Grade Science
This week, fourth graders had a chance to discover what’s inside the pellet that barn owls leave behind and why they do it! After a brief presentation, students opened their owl pellets and got started. They spent the next 30 minutes dissecting the pellet and sorting the bones as they went along. Students were excited to discover what their owl had eaten. The content of each pellet is unpredictable. Students had rodent or mole skulls in almost all the pellets. When the dissection was over, students took their bones home in a plastic bag.
What, exactly, are owl pellets? The digestive fluids of owls are actually very weak and they cannot digest body parts like bones, teeth, feathers or fur. Owls, therefore, must regurgitate pellets or castings of the indigestible bits before eating their next large meal. Regurgitation of pellets is similar to how cats cough up hair balls.
Interesting to see science at work.
Youth Leadership Initiative Participates in Mock Election
During the week of October 24th, older students at Fulton Science Academy took part in the Youth Leadership Initiative mock election. During their social studies classes, students headed to the virtual polls to cast their ballots for the offices of US President, US Senate, and the US House of Representatives for District 6.
Students have been following the political races closely, learning about their civic responsibility to be informed voters, and the long, difficult road to equal voting rights for all citizens.
For those with their finger on the pulse of the student body, the results of the presidential race were not unexpected, though the power that Clinton helped exert down-ballot was surprising, with upsets in the seemingly unassailable Congressional races.
Interestingly, the same percentage of voters chose a write-in candidate or to abstain altogether rather than vote for either Donald Trump or Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson combined.
By participating in this mock election, older grades learned about the democratic process and prepared to exercise their right to vote in the 2020 or 2024 presidential elections. Great job, kids!

Fall Celebration in Kindergarten
On Friday, October 28th all the Kindergarten students enjoyed a Fall Centers Party between our two Kindergarten rooms and the grassy area in the front of the school. Students decorated cookies (one to eat and one to keep!) and enjoyed a cup of “Spooky Brew” at the “Cookie Decorating Station.” Our little artists painted beautiful wooden frames at the “Frame Station”. After adding a little glitter glue, acrylic paint, a few 3-D stickers, and the commemorative picture of all their friends from our field trip to the Art Barn- this Fall keepsake brought smiles to everyone’s face when they got to take the frames home!
Students were finally able to put the last two weeks of daily morning estimation practice to good use during the “Estimation Station” activity. Parent Volunteers helped students look at several containers filled with treats and prizes and had each member of the group come up with and write an estimate for the amount of items inside one jar they chose as a group. After counting every item in each jar, the child that guessed the closest to the actual number received two items from the jar to put in their goody bag. The other children in the group each received one. Students had tons of fun estimating like crazy and earning prizes until it was time to switch stations!
In the “Storytelling Cave” students helped select and then listened to some of their favorite Fall stories inside a cozy tent complete with fluffy pillows and a cozy pumpkin blanket. During the “Ugly Pumpkin” writing and craft center, parent volunteers teamed up to help students complete a graphic organizer with kind adjectives to describe the poor ugly pumpkin and then make an ugly pumpkin craft. Check out the masterpieces resulting from this activity by the Kindergarten classrooms!
In front of the school, students added points earned during “Pumpkin Buckets” and used pumpkin sponges to transport water as fast as they could from a giant cauldron to plastic pumpkin buckets in the “Jack-O-Lantern Relay.”
Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a big success. The students couldn’t stop talking about all the fun they had on Friday all day today. They said it was the “best day all year.” Oh, if only they knew how many fun events they have to look forward to yet in Kindergarten…
Día de los Muertos
FSA students had a lot of fun this past Sunday October 30th, at the Atlanta Historic Center during the celebration of “Día de los Muertos.” They learned about and experienced a Day of the Dead festival, enjoyed traditional dances, crafts, and authentic Mexican food.
Let’s remember this celebration was proclaimed in 2003 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and brings a beautiful meaning to honoring our beloved departed ones.

Second Grade Board Games
Second graders have fun playing board games and interacting with their classmates as they rotate with different games.
Dr. Erkan's and Mrs. Kurt's Math Geniuses Club
Our little math geniuses in first grade were learning how to help cute little monsters in math riddles. They solved the math riddles that they were given by counting, adding and subtracting, grouping, eliminating, and of course critical thinking. Such activities greatly help our students develop analytical thinking and problem solving skills. Creating a solution to a problem by working collaboratively with their peers is a wonderful way to practice math.
Another challenge we took in our club was the "Marshmallow Tower" challenge. Our math geniuses used their creativity and geometry knowledge to build the tallest marshmallow tower with toothpicks. They worked really hard and put together great towers. If you need help building one yourself, ask one of our wonderful 1st graders:)
Our geniuses are wishing everyone a Happy Halloween! Boo!

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
How do I get started?
Simply log onto http://www.apogee123.org.
