The Riverwalk Roar
March 8, 2020
Note from Dr. Compton
Pride,
As you know, there is growing concern among health officials about the impact and spread of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) in the U.S. We want to reassure you that we are working with state and local officials to be prepared in case of the spread of COVID-19 in the Rock Hill area. As always, the well-being of our students and staff is our number one priority.
First, please know that we are working closely with state and local officials. Like you, we are monitoring news reports, but we are also seeking guidance from authorities with whom we have frequent conversations, and we are reviewing our protocols to ensure we are prepared for a health-related crisis. However, at this time, just like the surrounding schools, we're on a normal operating schedule. That could certainly change with short notice if the need arises, and we will keep you informed via all of our communication channels every step of the way.
Students will be sent home if they have a fever of 100.0 Fahrenheit or higher, or any other contagious symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.), and will need to remain home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours, without the use of medications. This is a standard protocol. Put simply, it’s no different than what we always ask of our families: If your learner is not feeling well, please keep them home so they can be comfortable and get better.
In addition, we want to pass along some important prevention tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these tips are the same measures we take to prevent the spread of everyday illnesses like the common cold or the flu:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
We are dedicated to monitoring the situation and sharing the most up-to-date information with you. Our teachers and staff will continue to remind students of everyday actions they can take to help prevent the spread of disease, include respiratory viruses. In addition, Nurse Donna and our Leadership Team will continue working closely with state and local officials in an effort to keep our students and staff safe and healthy.
Let's have another outstanding week!
Sincerely,
~Dr. Compton
This Week's Newsletter Photo
This week's photo was taken on Wednesday as elementary school dressed in their favorite storybook character, as part of Read Across America Week. We'd like to thank Thing 1, Thing 2, and Thing 3 for visiting Riverwalk Academy this past week.
Slight Modification To AM Drop-off - Starting on Wednesday, March 11th
As you know, the safety of our staff, students, and parents is a priority. We have about a 12-minute window between 7:20 am and 7:32 am that we have a minor situation in our car line that is avoidable. During that time, some parents are coming through to drop off their students as part of AM Lions Den, while some are parked, waiting to drop off at 7:30 am when our safety patrol comes out to open the doors.
Between 7:20 am and 7:32 am
AM Lions' Den - no change, other than we're asking that you stay in the right lane (outside lane).
7:30 Drop Off (for those arriving between 7:20 am and 7:30 am) - please stay in the left lane (inside lane). We will have a cone around where the cars merge. We're asking that parents who are arriving early for our 7:30 am drop off to stay in the left lane, behind this cone.
For the first few days, we'll have staff in the area to assist with lane assignments. At 7:30 am, we'll hold the right lane of traffic, so the left lane traffic can pull forward. At that time, we'll return to normal AM drop off procedures.
We appreciate everyone's understanding and support as we make this slight change to ensure the safety of all during this short arrival period.
Spring Pictures: Make-Up Day and Optional Re-Takes
We'll have our final yearbook photo day this Thursday. This day is for anyone who has missed a previous picture, or those who want a retake.
Bowling for the Band
Pride, please mark your calendars for Sunday, March 22 for our Bowling for the Band fundraiser at Strikers in Rock Hill. Our PTO did a similar event last year, and it was a hit. We filled about 32 of the 40 lanes available at Strikers. It's a fun afternoon of bowling for the family, with your fellow Pride members. Please reach out to Mr. Johnston if you have any questions. Click here to reserve your lane before they are gone.
Power O' The Pride
We sold over 120 shirts last week and they'll be sent home on Thursday, just in time for this weekend's Saint Patrick's Day celebrations. Let's also plan on wearing them on Tuesday, March 17th.

The Pride on Parade
Each week, we'll share photos of members of our Pride wearing their school gear out in the community. If you have any photos to share, please send them, along with a short description, to Dr. Compton.
On Sunday, Dr. Compton ran into Jordyn Petty, daughter of Ms. Petty (elementary music teacher). Jordyn played Gloria (the hippo) in Showtime Theatre's performance of Madagascar.
