The first "real" steamboat was introduced in the early 1800's. But the first prototype was made by a French man named Marquis Cloude de Jouffroy. The ones that were used on the rivers were usually 56 ft. long, 18 ft. wide, and 8 ft. in depth with a wooden hull.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages: the steamboat was much faster than any land transportation at the time, the could carry more cargo than any land cart, and could go up stream with ease
Disadvantages: could easily be sunk by a log or run aground on a sandbar, the hull was made of wood so it could rot.
