May 2015 - Kitley Elementary
PRINCIPAL'S LETTER
Dear Kitley Families,
With warmer weather FINALLY here, we can open the windows, work outside, and enjoy recess. It is hard to believe that MAY is here and we are down to just a few weeks left of our school year. Thank you to all of our volunteers this past year for your extra efforts. I would also like to thank our PTC. They have been phenomenal this year by putting in the extra hours for our kids. The Kitley PTC is looking forward to next year with goals to increase the amount of members, meeting attendance, and launch our next theme. Our mission is to grow our PTC membership and add to our volunteer list. We NEED and APPRECIATE our parents!!
We have several exciting events planned for the end of the school year. We will be administering Part 2 of ISTEP+ for grades 3-5 from May 4-May 11. Staff Appreciation week is May 11-May 15. The 5th grade JAM will take place after school on May 15 until 5:30pm. We are still looking for some 5th grade parents to help out with this fun event!
Our end of the year kindergarten program schedule is as follows:
* 5/11 2:45 Bengs, VanVleet, Rabourn
* 5/12 2:45 Fiddler, Miss G.
* 5/14 2:45 Huxley, Mrs. Gildea
The Folk Dance Club and Culture Club is working hard to prepare for Kitley’s 2nd Annual International Fair, which will be held on May 21st at 6:30pm. Please join us for food, music, and other cultural activities.
We will also be celebrating Field Days on May 21 (grades K-2) and May 22 (grades 3-5) with the rain date being May 26. Lastly, we will be celebrating our Teacher of the Year, Susan Blosser at the Teacher of the Year ceremony on May 13th. Congrats! Mrs. Stevenson!
The last day of school will be on May 27th. Please join us for our VIP Volunteer Breakfast on May 22 @ 8:00am IF you have volunteered this year! We appreciate YOU and want to treat YOU!! Kitley’s Awards Day Ceremony will then be held in the gym. We will begin at 9:30am and are excited to celebrate our students on this day. We hope to see you then!
Finally, I want to invite everyone to accept my invitation to the REMIND link included in this newsletter. It is another way for us to communicate information, news, and events with our Kitley family. Have a wonderful weekend!

Everyday Mathematics at Home:
Use Questions to Help
Although it’s tempting to give children answers when they’re confused, they learn more if you help them discover the answers for themselves. Try doing this with questions such as these:
* Have you seen problems like this before? Is there an example anywhere that might help?
* What is the problem asking you to do or to find?
* What’s one idea you have for finding an answer?
* Can you draw a picture of the problem? Can you use objects (like coins, beans, and so forth) to show the problem?
Writing at Home:
It’s all in the details
Commenting in general on your child’s writing is good. Offering a specific compliment is even better. “My favorite part of your story was when you said…” Be sure to tell him/her what part you liked best, but also why you liked is so much. Specific compliments from readers and listeners give the writer an idea of what worked in the writing and what to do again the next time he writes.

A Message from the Clinic
As the school year draws to a close, please be aware that if your student has medication in the clinics, a parent must transport it home. Medication will not be released from the clinic unless a parent takes it home. Empty prescription bottles will be sent home with the student. Students with doctor’s orders to carry emergency medication will be allowed to carry the items home, as FT procedure allows.
If your student has any type of over-the-counter medication that is not used frequently, please come into the school to pick it up before the last day.
If your child must take a prescription medication at school, please arrange to pick up the prescription by end of the day on Wed. May 27. Any medication remaining after the end of the school day will be destroyed unless you have called the nurse in advance. The nurse is not in attendance over the summer. Thank you for your cooperation and support of student safety.
Thank you,
Heather Anderson RN

Notice of Immunization Requirements for 6th Graders
Parents of current 5th graders:
Students need additional immunizations when they enter 6th grade. The IN State Dept. of Health’s required shots are Tdap and MCV4 for all 6th grade students. The requirement is based on grade level, not age; students who is 10 years old and up may receive the shots.
Please contact your student’s doctor as soon as possible to schedule an appointment before school begins in July 2015. Doctor’ offices may have limited appointments if you wait to call. The exclusion date for students without the shots is September 22, 2015. Written proof of appointment must be on file for the student to continue to attend beyond Sept. 22. Please send your elementary school nurse a copy of the updated shots if your student has already received the required shots. Send the middle school nurse the records if appointments are over the summer.
If you have questions you may call Peg Stanish RN, Supervisor of Health Services, at 862-2411 or Heather Anderson RN, Jenny Kiger RN, or Sandie Hickey LPN at Kitley at 803—5977. Thank you so much.
In addition to your private providers, the Marion Co. Health Dept. has many appointment times and walk-in clinics. Call (317)221-5700 for more information. The Jane Pauley Community Health Center at Hawthorne Elementary School (8301 E. Rawles Ave.) provides immunizations at affordable prices and accepts major insurance plans. Appointments are necessary—call (317)532-3999 for more details.
