Upcoming Week: Reader's Workshop
This week in reader's workshop we will continue with the 3 questions to ask and think about while reading nonfiction texts. I was super impressed with the way the kids attacked the skill of using the first two questions last week. This week we will also learn about two different text structures: descriptive and compare and contrast. The kids will practice using the questioning within these two structures. They will also analyze what makes up a descriptive structure as well as a compare contrast structure.
Book Reports: Your student should have brought home a packet of choices for their book reports. I hope this made it easier for you to see what is expected of the students. My main goal for this assignment is that each student reads a book from cover to cover and thinks about it in the end. Many students have been dropping books after a few chapters. It is really important for kids to see that they can read a full book from beginning to end. Plus, what a feeling!! Please let me know if you have any questions about the assignment. I would like for them to be turned in between Monday December14 - 16. The kids will present on the 17th and 18th.
Upcoming Week: Writer's Workshop
Our word study is going to be on prefixes and root words. The word study will be on exploring words using the prefix of re- , pre- un-. There will be no pretest, but more of a study of the meaning of words with those beginnings.
Upcoming Week: Math Workshop
The students have learned a lot about the strategies to use if they do not know an answer to a multiplication problem. This week we will talk more in depth about how division and multiplication go together and can be used to check work. We will also connect multiplication arrays with the area of a square or rectangle. Students will also continue to take multiplication timed tests. Please continue to practice those facts at home.
Find online multiplication games. I will be introducing students to a few online resources in the very near future. This is a good one: http://www.hoodamath.com/games/multiplication.html
