Here's What's Happening at Milan Elementary School
BASKETBALL JONES IS COMING TO TOWN FEBRUARY 26!
Free Family Fun Night, 6-8:00 p.m., Milan High School Gym. All students and their families are invited! No charge for admission. Souvenirs and concessions will be sold.
Milan Elementary is excited to have Jim “Basketball” Jones back with us this year to speak to parents and students during a free night for families and then perform for our students here at the elementary the following day. We look forward to his visits because his programs are always very entertaining and motivating for our students and a great way to get boys and girls “fired up” to do their best work on the upcoming ISTEP+ test.
There is no admission charge for the “Family Night” Show but souvenirs will be available to purchase along with the type of refreshments normally sold during high school athletic events.
Mr. Jones is one of the country’s top basketball handlers and a highly demanded motivational speaker. He visits hundreds of schools each year to share his personal story of overcoming Dyslexia and how his mom fostered his self-confidence and pushed him to be his best. His highly animated, story-based talks focus on always doing your best and being the “best version of yourself that you can be.” His stories are sure to delight students as well as parents and his basketball-handling skills are amazing!
Parents of students in Grades 1-5 can ask their child to tell them about Basketball Jones and what they have learned from him in his past visits to our school.
We hope you’ll join us for a night of fun, laughter, and inspiration in the Milan High School gymnasium. The program is from 6-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 26.
Statewide ISTEP+ Testing Begins March 3
MES students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will be participating.
We’d like to give a big pat on the back to all the parents who took time to attend our ISTEP Parent Meeting last month. It was well attended and gave parents an opportunity to learn more about the challenges this test will soon present to all Indiana students in grades three, four, and five.
Testing will begin next week. The first round of testing covers Applied Skills (writing, problem solving) and the second session, involving the enhanced use of technology, will begin April 27.
Grade 3 students will also be taking the IREAD test on Tuesday, March 10.
Parents can help by making sure their child has a good night’s rest every night and by scheduling doctor and dentist appointments after school hours. Also, please make sure your child is in attendance if he/she is not too ill to do well on the test.
Students arriving late to school may have to wait in the office if the testing session has already begun.
Most importantly, encourage your child to take the test seriously and “Do your best!” without putting on too much pressure.
At school, we are making sure each student has the opportunity to eat a healthy breakfast before testing, assigning extra staff to assist the classroom teacher in administering the test and doing everything possible to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum.
With all of us working together, our team of students, parents and staff, will make MES proud!
If you'd like more information about the test or even try your hand at some sample questions, we encourage you to visit these websites:
http://experience-ccra-in.ctb.com/ “Test your own knowledge. Try samples from ISTEP+ 2015!"
http://www.doe.in.gov/ This is the Indiana Department of Education’s website. Once there, go to Parent Portal on top bar, then click into IREAD or ISTEP+. This will provide you with helpful information about these tests and even give you sample questions that you can practice with your child.
http://www.acuityathome.com/index.jsp Students take the Acuity test three times this year. This helps to target what they know and in what skills they may need additional help. Logging onto this site allows students to practice according to individual needs.
