Gladiator News
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School Newsletter
May 8-12, 2017
This past Friday was our last early release of the year. The students rotated through sessions: STAAR review lessons and physical fitness activities. The sessions that I peeked in on were engaging and relevant to the student's interests. The math teachers found a way to tie in the popular water bottle flipping with a math concept. This will be our last year of early release.
Our 8th grade dance was a big success on Friday evening! Thank you to our student council sponsors: Malena Weil and Liza Washburn for everything they did to organize the event. We had a lot of parent volunteers and teachers decorate, chaperone, and donate supplies. Thank you! It was our first year to offer professional pictures at the dance. Based on the steady line the entire evening, this is something we will continue in the future. Grimaldi's Pizza and Maggiano's spaghetti were served. Again, another big hit! The 8th grade teachers donated a variety of candy for a spectacular candy bar! Our students looked incredible and were well behaved the entire evening. Lots of great memories were made. Our yearbook sponsor, Chuck Barksdale, captured a lot of photos that he'll turn into a slide show for the students later this month. (I've included a few pictures below of the decorations.)
May 8-11 is STAAR testing. Please avoid picking up your child early, if you can. We ask that outside lunches not be delivered to them this week as well. The lunch schedules are different due to the testing schedule. All students need to be prepared with two pencils and a book to read.
The next four weeks are packed with events! We will have an awards ceremony on May 31st. Students receiving an award will be notified the week of May 15th. The grade level ceremonies will be during the school day.
