TJH Update #17
November 18, 2020
A Message from Dr. Mitzner
Thank you for all the ways you support this school. Your influence on your child's education is important. Our staff has worked hard and I appreciate you supporting them through the PTSA or buying a pie or even donating cookies in December. I also want to thank our Tays Junior High families for supporting the 2nd Annual Titans Care event. (I know we didn't have the chance to have the Texans back again but it was a great event in its new format for our COVID-19 situation.)
Know I am grateful every day for having the opportunity to work with your children! Together we will endure through these tough times!
Regards,
Dr. Kris Mitzner
Principal
Tays Junior High
P.S. - Both the elementary and secondary instructional option form will be open from November 18 – December 4, and you are only required to submit a form if you wish to make a change to your child's instructional setting for the second semester marking period which begins Tuesday, January 5, 2021.

PTSA News and Events
On Friday, December 4th, the Tays JH PTSA Hospitality team will be hosting a Holiday Treat Exchange for our wonderful teachers and staff! We are are asking for donations of 3 or more dozen treats (cookies, bars, candies, etc). While we prefer homemade treats, bakery fresh treats are acceptable as well, however, no pre-packaged items. We will be filling a box for each teacher and staff member to take home a dozen treats. Please send all treats to school on Thursday December 3rd. In person students, can drop off treats at front doors to a staff member. KVA (or in person) parents can drop off at back of school on the 3rd from 4:15-5:00 pm.

Nurse's Notes
Is your child complaining of feeling sick?
Please consider keeping them home to monitor them or have them evaluated by their physician. We are seeing an uptick in COVID cases throughout the community, and we are sending lots of students home who are reporting that they had symptoms before they arrived at school or have had them for a couple of days. Students are able to access their assignments through Canvas if they are home sick and absences for illness will be excused. We are doing our best to keep our students, staff and community safe and healthy and ultimately keep our school open. We can only do that if we are making sure that students who are not feeling well or who are symptomatic are staying home. It is truly not worth the risk to send your child to school when they are not feeling their best. While they may not have COVID, if they have any type of illness, their immune system is weakened making them more susceptible to other, more serious illnesses. If you are unsure if you should send your child to school, please feel free to call us at any time to discuss your child’s situation.
Have you been asked to come pick your child up from school because they are not feeling their best?
We are following KatyISD guidelines for sending students home, and protocols for having them return to school are given to us from the district. If your child is sent home with two or more symptoms of COVID-19, they will need to be evaluated by a physician and cleared to return to school. They may recommend COVID testing. In order for your child to return to school, we must have a dr’s note and/or a negative COVID test. These are the current district guidelines. Please know that we are working hard to keep our campus as safe and healthy as possible so that we can remain open. I truly believe that this is the common goal of all of our staff, our students and our Tays Jr High parents. We so appreciate everyone working together to continue to make this happen!
My child was exposed to COVID… Now what??
If your Tays student was exposed to COVID, please don’t hesitate to call the nurse’s office for guidance and next steps. When and where the exposure happened can make a big difference in what you should do next. We are here, and we are more than happy to help. If you have a positive case in your home, it is *strongly* recommended that you keep your child home for a period of 14 days from the date of the family member’s positive test, even if the Tays student is negative. This helps us keep our campus as safe and as healthy as possible.
My child has COVID… Now what??
If your Tays student has tested positive for COVID, please contact the nurse’s office to inform us so that we can begin our contact tracing and so that we may guide you on your student’s return to school process. Also, and this is very important, your student must fill out the COVID-19 self reporting tile on the My Katy Cloud. Please make sure your student is logged in under their ID. When they fill out the tile, please make sure they are accurate in filling out the date that they were last on campus and when filling out the information about their close contacts. Close contacts are students that they sit with at lunch and anyone they may have been around at school without their mask on.
Free Student COVID Testing
Katy ISD is also offering enrolled students free COVID-19 testing services at the District’s Agricultural Sciences Center located at 5801 Katy Hockley Cut-Off Road from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Free student testing is also available on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. BY APPOINTMENT ONLY! Please visit the KatyISD website to make your appointment. Look for this app to make your student’s appointment

KISD Virtual Art Gallery
A highlight for staff at the ESC is student artwork displayed on the bulletin boards throughout all of the hallways. In past years parents have been invited to bring family members and tour the art on display, taking photos of their child’s artwork.
This year, rather than family groups entering the ESC, the Fine Arts Department has created a virtual art gallery. The virtual art gallery is a stellar example of how challenges such as COVID can lead to new and improved ways to celebrate student achievement and recognize success of our teachers.
