Student of the Grading Period
Christina Bowles
Our student of the fourth grading period is Christina Bowles. We are so proud she is part of our San Antonio High School family!
Brianna Sinha sat down with Christina and asked her a few questions to get to know her a little better. Here is what she learned about this outstanding young woman.
Brianna: After you graduate from San Antonio High School, what College do you want to attend?
Christina: I plan on going to Santa Rosa Junior College after I graduate. I was going to move up to Washington and go to college there since my father lives there, but I think I'll finish junior college here then maybe transfer up to a university there.
Brianna: What is your favorite subject in school?
Christina: My favorite subject is art because it's where I get to find my creative side and an outlet for my emotions.
Brianna: Who is a motivation for you to go to school?
Christina: Of course my family and friends motivate me to go to school. I look forward to seeing my friends at school, but if I'm being honest, it's my partner and my cat who really are the ones who inspire me to get up every morning. They both came into my life when I needed them.
Brianna: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Christina: I have yet to decide, but it is either being a music librarian, a technician or a psychologist.
Brianna: Do you like coming to San Antonio High School?
Christina: Yes, I definitely like being at San Antonio. It feels more like a family here compared to other schools I've gone to, and I'm not as stressed out as I used to be.
Congratulations, Christina! You are an inspiration to us all!
Easter Fun Facts
Did you know
- Many years ago, girls and boys would wake up Easter morning and build nests out of sticks and leaves so the Easter Bunny would leave them eggs. This is how the first Easter Egg Hunts started.
- The first Easter baskets were made to look like nests so now children receive colorful baskets filled with eggs and candies from the Easter Bunny.
- Pretzels were a food that was associated with Easter. It is believed that pretzels are the world’s oldest snack food. The first Easter Egg Hunt or “Roll” at the White House was in 1878!
- Everyday 5 million marshmallow chicks and bunnies are made to prepare for Easter.

April 13: Luis ChavezHealth And Wellness
One of the highlights of the year is our San Antonio Health and Wellness days. This year, they took place March 16 and 17.
These two days are filled with guest speakers who come to share with us what they do for a living and how they were able to achieve success. They also explain how we can have a career like theirs.
Also, there are speakers who teach us about issues around physical and mental health and wellness. For instance, we had speakers come from NAMI - the National Alliance on Mental Health. They are a group who support and advocate for people affected by mental health challenges.
Other speakers we had came from Petaluma People Services. They told us about all the services that are available to us, everything from career support to housing.
One of the highlights was a presentation from Assistant District Attorney Bill Brockley who taught us about the Fourth Amendment and our rights around search and seizure.
The two days taught us so much, and we are very grateful to Mr. Smith for all his work to organize these two days and get us so many awesome speakers!
Teacher Spotlight
Mrs. McGarry
This month, our teacher spotlight is on Mrs. McGarry who teaches English at San Antonio High School. Here is a little bit about her.
Q: What college did you go to?]
A: I went to a whole bunch of colleges because I took my time. The first college I attended was Golden West College which was a community junior college. The second college I went to was Cal State Dominguez Hills where I got my Bachelor’s Degree. I then took two years off and then went back to get my Master’s Degree in English at Cal State Long Beach. For my teaching credential, I went to San Francisco State University.
Q: Did you know you always wanted to be a teacher?
A: No, at first I wanted to write stories and screenplays; that is why I got into English in the first place, for creative writing and advertising. However, when I was in college, I started teaching a reading class for students of all ages, and it was then that I realized I really liked teaching and wanted to be an English teacher.
Q: Was it difficult to get your teaching credential?
A: Yes and no. Getting my credential wasn’t that hard, but there were a lot of things about teaching that I didn’t expect. For instance, I didn’t realize that each day would be so different one from the other. Also, the amount of paperwork was surprising.
Q: What was your biggest obstacle in becoming a teacher?
A: For me, it was getting over a fear of public speaking. Teaching the reading classes helped me get over it.
Q: Do you like being a teacher?
A: I love being a teacher because I love sharing literature with the students, and they always surprise me with their stories.
Thank you, Mrs. McGarry for being such an AWESOME teacher!
