Buffett Halloween Costume Guidelines
As Halloween approaches, please know that students are not permitted to wear any kind of Halloween costumes or costume accessories on or around October 31st. With instruction and learning being at the forefront of all we do, costumes can oftentimes be a distraction; therefore, we are requesting that no costumes or costume accessories be worn around this date. Thank you for speaking with your Buffett student about this matter.
Laptop Bags
The bag will allow your student to carry the laptop in the bag while having hands free for other belongings. The bag has a pouch for the student's charger so students can always have their chargers with them.
If the laptop bag is lost, a new bag can be purchased at the school store.
If your family is experiencing financial hardship and is unable to purchase a replacement bag, please reach out to Kristi Tolliver, kristina.tolliver@ops.org or (531)299-7513, to discuss your options.

Buffett Lockdown Drill
In continuing our efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for our students and staff at Buffett Magnet Middle School, we will have a practice lockdown drill on Wednesday, November 8th at approximately 9:15 A.M. This drill is to ensure that all students and staff in our school will know what to do in case of a real emergency lockdown situation.
During the practice drill, a team of police officers will be deployed. The officers will sweep the building to check that procedures have been followed. The drills will only take a few minutes.
Please review this information with your child so that it is understood that this is only a drill. Thank you for supporting the safety efforts of Buffett Middle School to protect the students, staff, and visitors in our building.

Nine Tips on Studying at Home
Counselor Connection -- Homework Is Important in Reaching Goals
Remember when you were a student and wished the teacher would say, “No homework today. Go home and have some fun!” You may have loved the lectures and the learning, but dreaded the tests and homework assignments. Well, you’re not alone. Most young people would rather play with their video games than sit down to read The Great Gatsby or work on math problems. But any goal worth achieving takes hard work. Work that takes place in the classroom and at home. In addition to reaching academic goals, doing homework teaches young people to follow directions, manage their time, and work on their own. Homework is Asset 23 of Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets, a list of the qualities, experiences, and relationships that help young people grow up healthy, caring, and responsible.
Here are the facts
Research shows that young people who spend at least one hour on homework every weekday are more likely to grow up healthy, stay committed to learning, and achieve their goals. About 47 percent of young people, ages 11–18, report doing at least one hour of homework every school day, according to Search Institute.
Tips for building this asset
All you may hear about homework from young people is that they hate it, don’t have any, or have too much the night before a test. Sometimes, young people actually lack essential homework skills. Once they get the hang of homework basics—organization, time management, and study skills—they can be more creative with their study strategies. Encourage them to keep trying.
