Principals' Post

Glen Oaks Families,


We look forward to seeing families on Thursday, May 28th for supply pickup. Please follow the procedure outlined below to ensure a safe and efficient pickup process. Additonally, we have many parents who have reached out asking how they can leave gifts for the teachers. While we truly appreciate the sentiment, we will not be accepting gifts due to health and safety reasons.


As this school year comes to a close, many uncertainties remain in relation to the current health crisis. Please know that we are considering many factors as we move forward in continuing to provide a world-class education to the Glen Oaks School community. We recognize that school may look different - and that is ok. We are confident in the abilities of our skillful and compassionate staff who will continue to meet our students where they are, providing targeted instruction to help fill gaps and move their learning forward. We are proud to also have various professionals available to provide academic, social, and emotional support to our students to best meet their needs as they transition back to school.


At this point in time, we do not have official guidance as to the structure for learning during the 2020-2021 school year. With ongoing guidance being provided by the State Board of Education, the NPD117 team continues to collaborate to develop a transition plan back to formal classroom instruction that will best meet the needs of our community.


We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate these uncharted waters and we thank you for all of the support you have given our staff and students during our remote learning journey. We couldn't have done this without you!

Glen Oaks Welcomes TWO New Admininstrators

TWO NEW Glen Oaks School adminstrators were approved at the May NPD117 Board of Educaton meeting. Dr. Carla Braun and Mrs. Stephanie Johnson will assume leadership duties at Glen Oaks for the 2020-2021 school year. Read below to learn more about each of these wonderful educators!

Dr. Carla Braun - Glen Oaks Principal

I am honored to have been selected to lead a school with such a rich tradition of excellence. I am continuously inspired by our deeply committed staff and our incredible students and will work hard to continue the legacy of excellence at Glen Oaks by keeping the academic rigor high while also placing a strong focus on social/emotional health. Our students’ safety, well-being, and growth are my top priorities.


I have been in education for ten years and have worked with students ranging from kindergarten through sixth grade. My most recent administrative experience was the assistant principalship at Glen Oaks these past two years, and I have loved every minute of it. I have a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Illinois University, a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of St. Francis (USF), and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, also from USF. I am a professional development leader through the Metro Chicago Math Initiative (MCMI) and teach educators throughout the country about mathematics instruction.


When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have been married to my husband for almost five years. We have a four month old daughter and a dog. I love being active; tennis, martial arts, and cycling are my favorite activities. I also enjoy reading non-fiction and crafting.


I believe that all things should be done with the best interest of our students in mind. I am dedicated to every student at Glen Oaks School and will do everything possible to ensure their success. I look forward to learning from and working with you this school year. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with anything. My door is always open.

Mrs. Stephanie Johnson - Glen Oaks Assistant Principal

I am excited to introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal of Glen Oaks School! Glen Oaks has always been near and dear to my heart, as I had previously taught here for 11 years (4th grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade most recently - some may know me as Ms. Calahan). Most recently I have spent the last 2 years at Sorrick School where I was the Curriculum Team Leader. I am so honored to be a part of the Glen Oaks family.


A little bit about myself, I have a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Illinois University. When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our Golden Retriever. I enjoy going to festivals, visiting the city of Chicago often, and enjoying the many dog friendly beaches and parks in the summer.


I will strive to continue the legacy of excellence at Glen Oaks as I am dedicated to the growth of each and every student and have high expectations for all. I look forward to an amazing year working with each and everyone of you and please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you need anything at all. This is going to be a fantastic year!

Materials Return and Collection

With physical school attendance coming to such an abrupt end, many students left school with materials or books that need to be returned to the classroom. Additionally, students left many of their personal belongings behind and we want to get those returned to you. We have developed the following systems to help us accomplish materials return and collection. Please follow the outlined procedures below:


MEDICATIONS: CALL THE SCHOOL TO ARRANGE FOR PICKUP

Mrs. Grochocinski has reached out to parents who have medications for their child stored in the school health office and has shared information regarding pickup of medications. If you still believe you have medications to pick up and have not already arranged for this with Mrs. Grochocinski, please call Glen Oaks School at 708-598-5711 to arrange for pickup.


LIBRARY BOOKS: EVERY TUES/THURS/FRI from 9am-12pm

Unsure if you still have books checked out that need to be returned? Log in to Destiny to check to see if you have books out! Watch this video if you need help logging into Destiny. Books should be left in the bins inside the DOOR 1 VESTIBULE.

Once you return your library books to Glen Oaks, we will wait a minimum of 10 days before we sanitize and check in the books. They will still show up in your check outs for at least 10 days.

STUDENT SUPPLIES AND BELONGINGS: THURSDAY, MAY 28th (SEE SCHEDULE BELOW)

The next big item we are tackling is how to get our Panthers their supplies and personal belongings from their classrooms. We will be approaching this as follows:


  • Your child's homeroom teacher has reached out to you via email requesting a response as to your preferece for the return of your child's supplies. PLEASE reply to your child's teacher by email so we can pack only the necessary supplies.
  • Staff will gather and bag the requested student belongings.
  • Bags will be placed on the BACK PLAYGROUND on THURSDAY, MAY 28TH and pickup will follow the schedule below (supplies will NOT be available for pickup prior to this date):

PLEASE PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING DURING SUPPLY PICKUP!

BOOKS OR MATERIALS THAT BELONG TO YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER: THURSDAY, MAY 28th

If your child has books or materials that are property of either the school district OR your child's teacher, please return these when you come to pick up your child's belongings on Thursday, May 28th. There will be a labeled location near your child's classroom supplies for you to return these items. THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE CHROMEBOOKS, CHROMEBOOK BAGS, OR CHARGING CORDS.


CHROMEBOOKS AND ASSOCIATED ACCESSORIES

If your child will be attending NPD117 schools again next year, please KEEP your Chromebook and charger AT HOME until next school year.


IF you are transferring out of NPD117, please return your Chromebook and charger to CONRADY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL. Technology staff are available on Wednesdays and Fridays at the main entrance of Conrady Jr. High between 10am - 12pm. This applies to all students throughout the district. We are using Conrady Jr. High as the central location for return.

Panther Pulse

Working and learning from home can be isolating, especially when we are quarantined to our homes for safety reasons. The Panther Pulse is a great way for our students and staff to keep in touch with one another during our time away from school!


Your child can join our Panther Pulse Flipgrid by going to the website https://flipgrid.com/pantherpulse and choosing to log in with Google. This will link them to their school account to access the site.


This week, we say FAREWELL on the Panther Pulse. While this is not the way any of us envisioned ending our school year, we still want to send you off on a positive note. You have worked so hard this year and have developed new, flexible learning skills as our school year shifted to remote learning. We are all SO PROUD of ALL our Panthers!


Take a few moments to say farewell to your fellow classmates, friends, and teachers and enjoy watching the good-byes left by others. We miss you and hope you have a wonderfully safe, healthy, and fun summer!


To contribute to our Flipgrid, your child will need to tap the green plus below to open the Flipgrid camera and record a short video to respond to the question of the week.


Once submitted, the video is held for approval. Once approved, the ENTIRE SCHOOL will be able to see the post - including all of our teachers!

Remote Learning Reminders

Please continue to check www.npd117.net for updates - this central location provides the most up-to-date information regarding our remote learning plans and the continued school building closures. Remember - our school buildings may be closed, but learning continues from home!


REMOTE LEARNING

As we enter our final week of school, just a reminder that there have been NO CHANGES to our instructional model. You and your child will continue access the District's remote learning plans in the same place, in the same way, and the expectations for student participation have not changed. Your child's teachers are available for support each day - please email them with ANY questions you may have.


TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT QUESTIONS

If you have questions related to logins or accessing websites/accounts, please ask your child's teacher. If they are unable to support you, they will direct your question to the correct person to promptly assist you.


If you have a District-issued Chromebook that is in need of repair, you can swap your student device with a loaner on Wednesdays and Fridays at the main entrance of Conrady Jr. High between 10am - 12pm. This applies to all students throughout the district. We are using Conrady Jr. High as the central location for exchange.

We will be conducting the exchange as an opportunity to safely trade a device that needs repair in order to receive a working loaner. We ask that if you are turning in a Chromebook for repair to bring the power cord along with it.


MEAL DISTRIBUTION

Meals will continue to be distributed to students from 10 a.m. until noon on Mondays and Wednesdays at Conrady Junior High School. THIS PRACTICE WILL CONTINUE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS AS WELL.


When picking up meals at Conrady, enter through the north entrance on Roberts Road and follow the traffic cones to proceed to door 8 to receive meals. Remain in your vehicle, provide us the number of children, and meals will be brought to you. Children do NOT need to be in the vehicle to receive meals.


Please call 708-233-4514 to speak with Food Services with questions or concerns including the inability to pick up meals at these times and we will attempt to make other arrangements.
