The Week of January 28th
A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL BAME
Dear Laurel Park Families,
Can you believe it is already February? While we are enjoying our current school year and living in the moment as much as possible, we are still faced with the reality that planning for next year starts now. A few helpful reminders:
- If your family would like to apply for a 2019-2020 track change, please locate the document at the bottom of this newsletter. Once you have reviewed the form, please complete one form per child and submit the form to our data manager, Elana Murray.
- Please do not send requests for particular teachers. We cannot promise placement and would not want anyone to be disappointed if a teacher moves tracks or grade levels. If you would like to share information about your child's learning needs, we welcome your feedback. We work closely with current teachers and support personnel to make placements that support all children.
- Please remember that Kindergarten registration has already started for the upcoming school year. If you know of any rising Kinders in our base, please direct them to our front office so that we may support them through this important transition. Our data manager, Elana Murray, will provide families with care and support, along with the rest of our front office team:
Lead Receptionist - Lori Baysden - lbaysden@wcpss.net
Lead Secretary - Rebecca "Becky" Lorenzen - rlorenzen@wcpss.net
Student Data Manager - Elana Murray - emurray3@wcpss.net

Laurel Park is supporting this effort with our own children's book drive. If you have books you can donate, they can be deposited in the collection bin in front of the library doors. Social Thinking Update
Happy Winter from Social Thinking!
In our Social Thinking Special, we have been focused on solving problems in play in Kindergarten and first grade and now we move into learning about Superflex and the team of Unthinkables.
In second and third grades, students have been learning about empathy and what it means to respect each other and work together.
The fourth and fifth graders have identified the important aspects of being a friend and how it affects others if we spread rumors or if we pressure friends into doing things they don’t want to do. We will also be looking at the difference between kidding and teasing. Lots of great lessons being learned that help us solve everyday problems!
GET READY FOR THE KIDS HEART CHALLENGE.
ALSO KNOWN AS JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
Parents,
It’s time for your child to show heart! This year, we’re launching the Kids Heart Challenge. It’s your child’s chance to be a Heart Hero by learning about heart health, spreading the word and raising funds to save other children. Have your child go to heart.org/kidsheartchallenge so they can take one of the three challenges and email family and friends to ask for donations. Your child will earn a glow in the dark wristband just for registering online. When they get donations, they will receive Echo, Finn and a clasp.
Your child will be receiving information during their Physical Education classes over the next several weeks. Please look it over and help them collect donations if you would like too. We will start collecting on Wednesday, Jan 9, 2019 and end our collecting on Friday, Feb 15, 2019.
ALL CASH OR CHECK DONATIONS SHOULD BE BROUGHT BACK TO SCHOOL AND TURNED INTO MR EDWARDS BEFORE Feb 15th. MR EDWARDS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF ALL ONLINE DONATIONS BY EMAIL.
Some prizes will be handed out during PE classes and others will have to be ordered and will be handed out 3-4 weeks after all donations have been turned in.
Thank you for supporting the physical and emotional well-being of our students and the American Heart Association.
Thank you, Mr. Edwards
