2021 - 2022 School Year!

Welcome Back Silver Gate Families!

In exactly one week, Monday, August 30th, is our first day of school and I couldn't be more excited.

I recently came across a quote that read, The best way to appreciate someone is to imagine your life without them. Last school year we experienced separation from each other, that is why Silver Gate's goal is to come back strong to school an reestablish a strong sense of belonging for our students and our community as well as maintaining high expectations for all.

To all returning students, I cannot wait to see you again and hear about all of your summer activities. As you go into your new grade level remember to ask questions, participate and, above all, have fun! For all of our new Gators, we are so GLAD YOU ARE HERE!!! I cannot wait to meet you and learn all about each of you. You’re going to love being at Silver Gate.

Please email Renee at rerickson@sandi.net if circumstances have changed and you will not be returning to Silver Gate. Include your child's name, grade, and the school they will be attending.

Leader in Me!

I am excited to share that Silver Gate was selected as a Leader in Me Pilot School! “The Leader in Me" is Franklin Covey's whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. This is a wonderful opportunity for our school to build on social emotional work in a very systematic approach. I will share further information as the year progresses.

TK/Kinder Meet & Greet: Friday, August 27th at 2pm

This is always a great time to meet your teacher, get familiar with the campus and make some new friends before the first day of school.

Kinder Student Assessments:

Minimum Days the first week of school for Kinder Students.

The first week of school all Kinders will be assessed. The assessment will be a brief snapshot of where your child is at so that we can have a tiny bit of data right from the start. Please sign-up at the Kinder Meet & Greet in your child's classroom. Assessments will be begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 30th with 20 minute time slots between 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. If you cannot make it, teachers will find time to assess during the school day.
Please pick up your student in the Kinder area by 12:35. The only entrance that will be open is the entrance on Venice Street in the upper Kinder Area. Our regular Minimum days are on Thursday. Please pick up your student from their classroom on that day. Thank you so much for your cooperation. It is going to be a great year.

Health and Safety Information

We are so excited to return to school in person! That being said, we are required to adhere to specific health and safety protocols. Please see below the protocols all Silver Gate staff, students, and families are required to follow.

  • Students, staff, and visitors will be expected to follow strict health and safety protocols.

  • All students, staff, volunteers, and visitors are required to wear masks at all times indoors.

  • Masks are currently optional outdoors.

  • Students will remain with their classroom groups during recess and lunch.

  • Hand washing stations and hand-sanitizing solutions are readily available across the whole campus and students will be directed on when they are required to wash or disinfect their hands.

  • Merv 13 filters have been installed in our HVAC system.

We will continue to update and adjust health and safety requirements based on California Department of Public Health and San Diego Unified requirements. I appreciate everyone's cooperation in these matters.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at mvidal-fowler@sandi.net

Teacher Requests

I have received several emails for teacher requests. Please understand that teachers spend hours creating new classes. Our top two priorities are gender balance and academic range. Then we look to create classes where students have opportunities to create new friendships and generate new class energy. Our team at SGE is committed to providing absolute excellence for every child as we honor and value all students dynamic needs. The teachers draw out student strengths and maximize learning resulting in all students having the confidence and intellect to execute amazing academic and social skills.

Before & After School Information

Students may arrive any time after 7:25 a.m.

(unless they are participating in the morning YMCA program.)

We ask that children and their siblings not play on playground equipment in the morning before school begins. When students arrive they are to go to the field or head to their classroom line.

Students are released from their classrooms at 1:55 p.m. each day except on our Thursday and all other minimum days when students are released at 12:35 p.m. Please be on time to pick up your students from the designated drive-thru area.

VIRTUAL Back to School Night

Thursday, September 2, 2021 -More detailed information to follow

Who Needs To Enroll?

Families of incoming TK/Kinder students not previously enrolled, and/or families of TK-4th grade students who recently moved to our community should enroll their children at Silver Gate Elementary. Please visit https://www.sandiegounified.org/schoolfinder to verify you live within our school boundaries then complete the process through our ONLINE ENROLLMENT

Who Does NOT Need To Enroll?

Students that were enrolled at Silver Gate last year do not need to re-enroll, your enrollment automatically continues

All students must be up to date with their immunizations prior to the first day of school. The office must have a copy of complete vaccination records. If your child is not up to date with their CA STATE LAW REQUIREMENTS, they will not be able to attend school on the first day. Last year, we withheld two children from class and it was very sad. Don't let that be you! The health office will be reviewing all records next week. They will call you if your child is missing information. Please respond right away so we can update your child's file. Thank you!

Please do not send your child to school when they are sick.

When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2200 by 9:00 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email Renne Erickson at rerickson@sandi.net

Any child arriving after 7:50 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. This is disruptive to your child and the entire class. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time.

While we are so excited to welcome out families back to campus, we are still limited in the number of volunteers we can allow onsite. I anticipate this changing as the year continues and guidelines are updated.

Please take a look at the district guidelines for volunteer requirements.

Here are the biggest changes to the guidelines and requirements.

  • School visitors/ volunteers must follow the school’s health and safety procedures such as signing-in, daily health check procedures and wearing the Visitor/ Volunteer badge at all times while on campus.

  • Essential volunteers who are fully vaccinated do not have to test weekly. Those not vaccinated do have to have a weekly covid test.

  • Visitors who are unable to wear a face mask must arrange for an alternate family member to conduct business on their behalf; volunteers must comply with the mask requirements.

Families can sign up online at: https://www.ymcasd.org/character-builders-registration

All students continue to be eligible for free lunch this year. At this time, students will not need to enter their pin number to receive a lunch. Additionally, you may contact Mrs. Fatima at: silvcafe@sandi.net if you are interested in receiving a take home meal at the end of the day. The meal will include supper and breakfast for the next morning.

We have very limited parking around Silver Gate Elementary. Please be kind to our neighbors by keeping their driveways open and free. The staff parking lot is only for staff and we kindly request that you do not enter the lot or drive through the alley. We have had some very close calls with drop off and turn around situations. Please do not park in the bus loading zone. We also strongly encourage you to model good habits for your children by using the crosswalks. Please pass this important message along to anyone who may be picking up your children (grandparents, child care provider, etc.). Your child's safety is always top priority and never an inconvenience. We appreciate your help.

SDUSD School Safety Meeting

San Diego Unified School District is hosting a special School Safety meeting for families this coming Monday, August 23, at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom, and all are invited to attend.

This virtual town hall meeting will provide families a chance to bring up any questions or concerns about returning to school, and will also include district staff and medical professionals to share more details about the safety measures and procedures mentioned above.

Go to Zoom - Monday, August 23 - 5:30 p.m.
