FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School :: APRIL 15th, 2014
The FHS is a monthly on-line school newsletter. It will be emailed to you through School Reach. There will be weekly reminders of important events and activities that are planned for the upcoming week.
Dear Parents and Members of the OLQHS Community
I hope you all had an opportunity to see this year’s play, Finian’s Rainbow. It was wonderful and the talent of the children is unbelievable. Mrs. Tanner and Mrs. LeDoux have an ability for bringing out these children’s gifts. The students were well behaved and took the responsibility seriously.
The Aspire test concluded today. It went extremely well especially the technical part of it. The students were prepared for the technical aspects of the test because they all work on the Success Maker program and they develop these necessary skills in computer class . The testing was very different. It was only about 90 minutes or less for three days. The SATs really were a week of just testing. We lost very little instructional time which is great because it concerns me that we lost 6 days of school to “Lice and Ice”. I know the Math was difficult but we will use the data to improve teaching and learning. This was a pilot test and we will use it as a benchmark to move forward. The results will not be available until the Fall.
OLQHS hopes to offer the Success Maker Program this summer. We are working on the logistics with all the construction that will be going on.
It is almost the end of this school year. There is a lot left to do and to celebrate. I hope everyone has a wonderful and blessed Easter.
OLQHS is an incredible place to be.
Ms. JoAnn

The Fulfillment of Our Faith
Easter is a day of celebration because it represents the fulfillment of our faith as Christians. St. Paul wrote that, unless Christ rose from the dead, our faith is in vain (1 Corinthians 15:17). Through his death, Christ saved mankind from bondage to sin, and He destroyed the hold that death has on all of us; but it is His Resurrection that gives us the promise of new life, both in this world and the next.
What Is the Easter Duty in Roman Catholicism?
Because of the central importance of Easter to the Christian faith, the Catholic Church requires that all Catholics who have made their First Communion receive the Holy Eucharist sometime during the Easter season, which lasts through Pentecost Sunday, 50 days after Easter. (They should also take part in the Sacrament of Penance before receiving this Easter communion.) This reception of the Eucharist is a visible sign of our faith and our participation in the Kingdom of God. Of course, we should receive Communion as frequently as possible; this "Easter Duty" is simply the minimum requirement set by the Church.
Instant Wisdom
Why Are Fractions Important?
Fractions are important because we need a way to represent things that are a portion of a whole. Whole numbers are, of course, sometimes easier to work with. But, since things sometimes become divided, it's necessary to have a way to label those portions.
Fractions are very important in math because they are a building block from which to base more complicated equations. You will use them every day if you become a doctor, an architect, or even a pizza maker (make mine half pepperoni)!
What is the point of learning fractions, particularly how to add, subtract, multiply and divide them, when we have calculators that can do everything for us?
One answer is that when you use a calculator you should understand what the calculator is doing. Or some time you may need to do a calculation with fractions and not have a calculator around (like on parts of standardized tests).
I think a much better reason for knowing fractions is that the techniques you learn for fractions are exactly the same ones you will need for parts of algebra. If you don't understand and master the ideas for fractions, then you will find learning algebra difficult. Let's see some examples of how the techniques of fractions transfer to algebra.
Algebra involves quantities called variables (that can represent values perhaps not yet known). One kind of formula in algebra that has one or more variables is called a rational expression. Adding and subtracting rational expressions is just like adding and subtracting fractions - you need to use a common denominator.
As part of helping your children with fraction, you can make your child draw different shapes of fractions and color them accordingly. Learning fractions is all about creating a visual mathematical matrix for your kids to brainstorm. Understanding fractions can become really easy through drawing charts that represent the same fractions in numerous ways. One of the most important aspects of math fractions help is that the kids realize the importance of fractions in real life. Challenge your kids to figure out the fractions of different ingredients used while making dinner at home. Once your kid knows the basic functions of fractions (1/2, 1/4), it will be really easy for them to advance further in using fractions in math. Memorization is also an integral part of learning fractions; you can use flash cards to distinguish fractions that will help your kid to solve the problems faster. There are different games available for your kids that will make learning fractions fun.
Math fractions are not really that scary; it’s just that many kids have formed a wrong impression about them. Many just need proper help with fractions so that they are not scared away simply by the word fractions. Try working with your children so that they understand fractions better and the fear will melt away.

Congratulations to AR Stars Luke Queenan, Warren Henning & Cara Hanks, 8th grade; Connor Welsh , Juliette Lemoine, & Zachary Tassin, 7th grade; Ana-Claire Perkins, Gabe Meyer, Gabriell Little, 6th grade; and Brennan Welsh, 4th grade. May 5 is the final day to become a Star this year.
Thanks to everyone who visited the Spring Book Fair. We made a profit of $2500 plus $800 in books for the library and classrooms. Special thanks to volunteers Kristine Hilliard, Stephanie Lie, Evelyn McGee, Anna Reyes, and Margaret Wright who helped set up the fair and keep it running smoothly. Because of these library fundraisers we are able to order $8000 in new books each year to keep our students enthusiastically reading.
SUMMER READING LISTS: The lists for students entering grades 4-8 are now posted on Edline. Students will receive copies of the reading lists and assignments in their report card packets at the end of the school year.
American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart
Our school’s Physical Education classes recently participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart. Students in grade first through sixth participated in the event. While, improving their jump rope skills daily in physical education class, the students learned about helping others through exercise, eating healthy foods, and staying active to maintain a healthy heart. The students made food pyramids and food plates that showed the 5 basic food groups. Also, they made posters of fun activities and exercises that keep the heart happy and healthy. For donations to the American Heart Association, each student promised to jump rope daily. For the big “Jump Rope for Heart” event, over 350 students gathered to jump rope in the school’s gym for an hour and 30 minutes. Coordinators Doug Dietz and Kim LaRocca tallied the donations to be amazingly over $22,000 that will be given to the American Heart Association.
FROM THE ACCOUNTING OFFICE
All school fees are due by May 9th if not scheduled to draft from FACTS. This includes after school care, lunches, library books, and any other fees owed. Notices will be sent home at the beginning of May if there are any fees from the 2013-2014 school year that are still outstanding. If your child does not receive a notice from the accounting office then your account is up to date and this deadline does not pertain to you.
If all outstanding fees have not been received in the school accounting office by May 15th, your children may not participate in final exams or year-end activities, such as PK Closing Ceremonies, K Stepping Up Program, awards ceremonies, or any eighth grade activities. Additionally, if payments are received after May 15th, report cards may not be available until after June 1.
Please review charges still outstanding and contact Mrs. Wallwork or Mrs. Goodwin in the accounting office if you need to make special payment arrangements.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PARENTS TO BE SURE ALL SCHOOL FEES HAVE BEEN PAID AND ALL BOOKS HAVE BEEN RETURNED.
