The Counseling Capsule

From the CYES School Counselors

Week of April 4 - 8, 2016

Hello, April!

April's Character Pillar is TRUSTWORTHINESS.

The Pillar Color is BLUE.

Character Spirit Day will be Friday, April 8 - wear blue! Be a True Blue Friend!

Other happenings in April from the counselors include TEST TALKS for Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 who would benefit from learning some extra motivation and testing strategies, in support of SOL success. Test Talks will take place during Encore time, when the counselors will meet with students one on one for 5 minutes during Encore time. We may pull up a chair in your room or be out in the hallway so as to get the students back to class quickly. Should parents be able to attend the test talk with their child, a time that is convenient for them before or after school will be scheduled. Thank you for your support as we support Student Success!

Did you know that there are 11 principles of effective character education?

These principles are what we use to guide our collaborative efforts in creating a firm foundation for our school community based upon the Six Pillars of Character.

Briefly, these principles are:

  1. The school community promotes core ethical and performance values as the foundation of good character.
  2. The school defines “character” comprehensively to include thinking, feeling, and doing.
  3. The school uses a comprehensive, intentional, and proactive approach to character development.
  4. The school creates a caring community.
  5. The school provides students with opportunities for moral action.
  6. The school offers a meaningful and challenging academic curriculum that respects all learners, develops their character, and helps them to succeed.
  7. The school fosters students’ self-motivation.
  8. The school staff is an ethical learning community that shares responsibility for character education and adheres to the same core values that guide the students.
  9. The school fosters shared leadership and long-range support of the character education initiative.
  10. The school engages families and community members as partners in the character-building effort.
  11. The school regularly assesses its culture and climate, the functioning of its staff as character educators, and the extent to which its students manifest good character.

These 11 principles are the goals of Chris Yung Elementary School and our community as we work together to form new traditions, incentives, and a positive school climate within our school culture.

Bet you didn't know there were 11 of them!
