Happy Friday Wildcat Families!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for your tremendous efforts this week to help us get our Wildcats connected to their new classes, new teachers, new learning management system, and new reality! Our first week has been a great success with the majority of our students logging in, prepared for their classes, and participating in their coursework. Though we would much prefer seeing all of our Wildcats in person and on campus, I know we are all doing our best to ensure that our students feel welcomed and successful in our virtual environment.
Please continue to reach out with questions and concerns so that we see even more connection and more success next week.
I know that we have all had a steep learning curve this week, but I have been so impressed by everyone's persistence, flexibility, and collaboration. We have such a wonderful Wildcat community, and I am so proud to be a Wildcat!
Sincerely,
Heather Golly
Patriot Day
Nineteen years ago today, on September 11, 2001, we suffered the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil in U. S. History. Although we remember the attacks, those are overshadowed by the incredible acts of heroism by thousands of Americans that helped each other on that day and many more days after that. My dear cousin, NYC Firefighter Jeffrey Olsen, was one of the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11 in the twin towers. His station, Tenhouse, is on Liberty Street and is located across the street from the World Trade Center. He was one of the first firefighters to enter the towers after the attack. Though we are struggling with many complicated societal issues right now, it is important that we stand together for each other and remember the fallen and their wonderful contributions to our country. #strongertogether

Canvas Resources
Our Wildcats are doing a great job navigating our new learning management system Canvas! Teachers are learning as well, and the grace and flexibility we have shown each other as we learn together has been awesome to see.
Canvas has a great way for parents to be able to observe their student's dashboard, their classes and coursework, and to communicate with their teachers.
You will need to download the Canvas app and then have your student locate a "pairing code" for you to use to sign up as a parent observer.
CLICK HERE for the VIP (Vista Institute for Parents) Canvas Support page. Watch the videos to see how to download the app and how to find your pairing code. Elementary teachers are providing these codes to each parent, but at the secondary level, students can find their pair code very easily on Canvas and share with their parents.

Attendance Matters!
Students are considered "present" if they log in to their scheduled Live Zoom meetings each day (synchronous) AND if they log on and complete any work during their Learning Options & Work Time (asynchronous) periods.
If students complete work early in a Learning Options & Work Time period, they can log in early for a different period and continue independently with their work in that class. The intention is for each student to log in to each of their classes every day and make progress on their classwork.
New Attendance Codes:
A = absent
1 = present for a live Zoom meeting
2 = present for an asynchronous period (by logging into the class on Canvas and working on classwork)
Remember, absences must be cleared within 72 hours (3 school days) after student returns to school. If your student was accidentally marked absent or if you are planning a trip in which your student will miss 5 or more school days, please notify the attendance two weeks in advance to set up an independent study contract.
Please know that these attendance procedures are new, and there will be some adjustments that we are still making. If you have any concerns, please communicate with your student's teacher or with our attendance office (760) 726-8003 x63020 or yeseniabeas@vistausd.org

Family and Community Liaison
It is a pleasure to be in touch with our Wildcat families again. Despite beginning our school year 2020-2021 with some challenges, this will not prevent us from offering virtual workshops to our parents.
We will continue to offer Vista Teen Outreach food resources beginning next week, starting with a smaller number than usual, but hope to increase it little by little according to our community’s needs.
Email your Roosevelt Family and Community Liaison Ms. Gabby Thompson, gabrielathompson@vistausd.org or dial extension 63013 if you would like to join a workshop or for suggestions on future ones, or to make an appointment for assistance with any other matters or help with resources.
