What a Week!!!
Students should have brought home new Learning Plan Proposals that need to be filled out and returned not later than October 1st. We will use these to update their current learning plans or to start their plans if they are new.
8th grade had a cool opportunity to Skype with a friend of mine in LA, California about the wildfires and what it was like for all of them. She took us outside and walked around her neighborhood to show us the current conditions and answer any questions we had. The students had had a debate about whether or not the fires were worse due to climate change or the impacts of environmental law.
In our Mystery unit, they had to try and solve a robbery to check whether they had the skills that a detective needed to solve real cases. I gave minimal guidance and they learned real quick that note-taking and organization were essential. We all discussed perseverance, attention to key words and details, and good communication skills. They did an excellent job!
For our Stockmarket game they organized into teams, named their teams and picked their motto. Next week we will begin to look at what is a stock and how do we figure out how to choose them. They will also have to try and spend 100,000 to help them narrow their focus.
We are also looking at the products in our home, closet, bedroom etc.. to see what we might like to invest in.
We also spent some time in the park this week to learn how to disconnect, relax our brains, enjoy the quiet, and find our inner creativity. Many kids were surprised how much more focused they were and how creative they could be in the peace and quiet.

What are We Working On!!!!
For their Asynchrous lessons, we are going, to begin with, focusing on our Growth Plans and looking at What I Wish My Teacher Knew. This is a great way for your children to learn how to self-advocate for themselves as well as making them aware of the areas they excel at and the areas they need to work on. For some students, they become so overwhelmed by anxiety or stress that they can not communicate where the stress is coming from. I have learned that if I know the areas of struggle, I can start checking off the list of different things until they realize what it is. I am hoping this helps their teachers as well.
We are also jumping into the Stock Market Game in Middle School. We dabbled with it last year but this year we are going full board and entering the competition! COVID, election, etc.. should make it very interesting and extremely educational this year!!! We are going to have a class competition as well as enter the national competition!
Game of Life
Resources and Opportunities
I am also sharing the registration for GAMS online conference this year. GAM is Missouri's Gifted Association and they have a conference every year that is open to educators and parents. It does cost but they have a ton of great resources and sessions. Regular classroom teachers, I would suggest you going sometimes as well because it would provide strategies for you to use in the classroom and some background knowledge as to how gifted students tick!
The second link is to a free event through the GIfted Speaker Series. This talk will focus on ways to help gifted and twice-exceptional students develop executive functioning skills such as organization, self-advocacy, communication, and goal-setting. There will be a time for questions at the end.
Last, DESE is offering GIfted and Talented Tuesdays which is a free ZOOM each week for a wide variety of people and things, but there is a section for students and it is space-themed this quarter.
