Empirical and Molecular Formula
Nylon-6
Empirical Formula Steps
- (Assuming 100 Grams is used) we are able to substitute the percent sign for grams
- C: 63.68 / 12.01 = 5.302 mol C
- N: 12.38 / 14.01 = 0.8837 mol N
- H: 9.8 / 1.008 = 9.72222 mol H
- O: 14.14 / 16.00 = 0.88375 mol O
- This gives you the preliminary empirical formula as C5.302N0.8837H9.722O0.88375
- The final step is to divide each subscript by the smallest giving you the final formula as C6 H11 N O
Molecular Formula
(C12H22N2O2)
Chemical Structure of Nylon-6
Due to the fact that the ends of the nylon fibers in nylon-6 are repeating, there are no side chains. This makes the inter molecular forces working on these products easy to identify. Since there are no side lengths, the Hydrogen and Carbonyl Oxygen (carbon double bonded with oxygen) form a crystallized chain thanks to the hydrogen bonding between the two. This is what gives the nylon its' strength
