Whaling is the hunting of whales primarily for meat, oil, and blubber.
Began around the 12th century.

International Whaling Commission (IWC)

Set limits on the numbers and size of whales which may be taken.

Hunting for Science

IWC ban on commercial whaling allowed for hunting humpbacks and minke whales for scientific purposes. It's a loophole that Japan had taken advantage.
