Spectrums Night of the Living Drag!
TONIGHT AT 7PM IN THE UC BALLROOMS!
Why is Drag Important to the Queer Community?
The term “drag” refers to an LGBTQ+ sub-culture in which people dress and act contrary to one’s own gender conventions, or in a dramatized caricature of another gender. The word originates from a slang language used in Britain among the gay community in the late 1800s called Polari, and derives its root from the sensation of long skirts trailing on the floor. There is a long history of drag within the performing arts, spanning a wide range of cultural and artistic traditions. It gained popularity in the numerous vaudeville theatres across America from the turn of the 19th Century until the late 1930s, by which time it had worked its way into the LGBTQ+ sphere. The drag scene is currently in a phase of rapid expansion and experimentation, and will only continue to get more unique, expansive, and prevalent.
