Digital Instruction
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Due to staff illness, 1/19, 1/20, and 1/21 have been designated Digital Instruction days for grades 8-12. Because of this, MJHS students will learn from home for the remainder of the week. Please read the information below for important details regarding at-home instruction:
- Beginning tomorrow, 1/19/22, your student will see an attendance link on the Canvas Calendar Event for each class.
- Students will need to click and complete this link at the beginning of each class period, and they will need to do it each day for each class. That means they will complete an attendance link five times each day as he or she is learning from home.
- If students do not complete the link, they will be marked absent from the class.
- Each teacher will post assignments for the day on the Canvas calendar. Some classes will require Zoom class meetings while other classes will provide instruction through videos that teachers share. Every class will have work every day, so please make sure your student is participating in each class.
- We will follow a regular bell schedule for classes. Students will need to complete the attendance link/arrive for Zoom first period by 8:20, second period by 9:33, third period by 10:46, fourth period by 12:29, and fifth period by 2:12. This will ensure that classes and teachers who are scheduling Zoom meetings will be available to each set of students throughout the day. This plan is the same plan that grades 10-12 are following at MHS.
- For classes that are learning through pre-recorded videos or screencasts, teachers will be available to answer questions through Zoom for a portion of each class period. Students will still need to log in and complete the attendance link at the beginning of the period for classes that are pre-recorded.
- Students will return to in-person instruction on Monday, 1/24.
Please check your email over the course of the next three days for any updates that are necessary.
Thank you for your partnership and flexibility as we work to serve students. I know these circumstances are less than ideal, but we feel fortunate that we are able to continue instruction over the next several days.
Sincerely,
Melissa Stowers
Principal
NAEP Testing - We are excited to announce that our school has been selected to participate in the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). It is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what students across the country know and can do in a variety of subject areas. Some of our 8th-graders have been selected to take mathematics and reading assessments. To those that have been selected for this important test, you have all our support and I have no doubt that you will represent us well! More details to follow as we move closer to our school’s test day. Thank you in advance for your involvement.
Inclement Weather - We are reaching the point in the year where we may see snow and ice. If we have a weather event, please monitor the radio, television, social media, or MCS district website to look for delays or cancellations. Check for Maryville City Schools (not Blount County or Maryville Christian). The district's automated messaging system will also send out phone calls and e-mails if there is any change to the schedule. If you have had any changes to your home/main phone number, address, e-mail, or emergency contacts, please let the front office know ASAP.
District - Spotlight 2022 - On February 21st, the entire district staff (teachers, administrators, and support staff) will participate in Spotlight - our annual retreat intended to inspire, rejuvenate, and honor faculty and staff for their hard work and dedication. Traditionally, gift cards are collected from parents and the community and used as prizes or gifts during the event. If you are in a position to purchase (or re-gift) gift cards for this occasion, we would greatly appreciate it. Please drop gift cards off in our school front office. THANK YOU!
Yearbooks - Yearbooks are still on sale via www.YearbookOrderCenter.com for $40.00 and will incur a $3.99 service fee on January 15 due to labor shortages from the yearbook company. To ensure you receive the current price of $40.00 please visit https://www.yearbookordercenter.com/ by January 14th, and use School ID 12906.
Please send photos to Ms. Peery or hjeshare.com ID 12906.
This year's yearbook theme is The Murville Story. If you have unique or historical ties to Blount County, please let Ms. Peery know in person or via email. We want you to be a part of our yearbook!
Basketball parents, please share action shots with the yearbook staff at hjeshare.com ID 12906. We need photos of many school events and sports activities.
Book Club - The MJHS Book Club has two awesome book options for this month: Poison for Breakfast by Lemony Snicket and The Girls I've Been by Tess Sharpe. Start reading now, and join them to discuss on January 26th!
Cornerstone Club - There will be a Cornerstone Club meeting, Wednesday morning, in the Art Room from 7:40-8:10 am.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes - Our FCA meets in the auditorium every Thursday morning at 7:45 a.m.
Ladies Bible Study - Please join us for a young ladies Bible Study hosted every Wednesday morning at 7:45. The group meets in room 314. Please see Mrs. Clark for more information.
Ready to start driving? – Students MUST request their 1010 Form in the MJHS Attendance Office before going to the DMV to receive their Learner’s Permit. If you have additional questions, please contact Mrs. Jenkins in the school office or email chris.jenkins@maryville-schools.org. 1010 forms are given based on the previous 9 weeks grades. If you are failing multiple classes, you are not eligible for a 1010 form until your grades are brought up to passing. The 1010 forms are good for 30 days during the school year.

Please see the daily announcements in your email for additional details.
Students will be provided with shuttle service from three different major cities (Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville) to travel to/from Tennessee Tech campus at Cookeville on before and after the week long residential camp.
As part of our “get the word out” efforts, CEROC will be conducting two introductory Zoom webinars for interested students discussing the camp, expectations regarding the camp, as well as cybersecurity in general. Update from MCS District Regarding Illness
The Tennessee General Assembly recently passed new legislation during a special session regarding how schools and government agencies handle COVID. Guidance from the Tennessee Department of Health stemming from the new legislation is as follows:
- Government agencies in Tennessee may not require isolation of cases or quarantine of contacts. We can recommend/suggest/encourage/educate only.
- Schools may not exclude kids specifically due to a COVID diagnosis/test result. However, they can continue existing policies to keep symptomatic ill children out of school. Public Health cannot be part of enforcing that policy.
- We will end issuing quarantine letters for household contacts and close contacts. When families contact the clinic to notify of a student's close contact or household contact, the school nurse will share that the TDH recommends but does not require quarantine. MCS will continue to honor parent/guardian choice for household contacts and close contacts.
- We will not automatically issue 10-day isolation for positive cases. The school nurse will share the TDH guidance to isolate, but not require it. MCS will continue to provide medical excuses for positive cases whose parent/guardian elects to follow 10-day isolation.
- Students and staff exhibiting symptoms will continue to be excluded from school just as we would for the flu. Please refer to our procedures for Illness for additional guidance.
