Weekly Parent Survey
Jasper Parents,
Each edition of Jasper E-news will include quick data questions for parents. This survey will be one way to gain feedback from our parent community on current practices at Jasper High School. Please take a moment to provide your input. The survey is anonymous, but at any time you may call Jasper High School at (469) 752-7402 to speak with an administrator regarding any concern. We appreciate you taking the time to share this information with us.
Thank you!

PISD Substance Abuse Prevention - Did You Know. . .
One of the most concerning issues with vapes, e-cigarettes, etc., is that it is virtually impossible to visually recognize what is or isn’t inside of the vaping device. Most e-juices look similar (brown, tan, reddish oily consistency) and smell very sweet. The reality is most of these devices are obtained on the black market or online, virtually eliminating the ability to definitively identify the contents of any single vaping device and/or pod.
As adults, our first steps include sharing knowledge of this growing issue, keeping a close eye out at home and at school for these devices and sweet smells, staying up-to-date on available research and resources, and talking with our child(ren). Please look at the image below of the most recently developed vaping device:

October 16th Testing Day
On Wednesday, Oct. 16th, all students will be testing from approximately 9 am – 1:00 pm. Following the respective test, students will have block lunch, and then they will proceed with an abbreviated 7 period schedule.
10th grade students will be taking the PSAT. This test is important because it will gives experience in taking timed college entrance exams and will give you a projected SAT score. From that score students can determine the skills improvement needed before taking the SAT. Calculators are allowed but will not be provided. Since this is a College Board exam, mechanical pencils are not allowed. Students must be on time as they may not start the PSAT late.
This is the first time that most of our students will be taking a college entrance type exam. While these scores will not be sent to any colleges or used to determine any scholarships, it is a good first look at how students will score. Students will be able to see their scores on-line in December. During 10th grade academic conferences in the spring, we will review the exam scores and discuss college requirements. The 11th grade PSAT is the exam that determines the National Merit Scholar program.
9th grade students will be taking the CogAT. This Cognitive Abilities Test measures both general and specific cognitive abilities. The general reasoning abilities measured by the test show the cognitive process and strategies that help a student learn new tasks or solve problems. The CogAT measures students’ learned reasoning abilities in the three areas most linked to academic success in school: Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal. The results ensure that teachers receive a balanced view of each child and assist in adjusting the instruction to better meet the students’ learning needs.

Building Access for Students
The school day is from 9:00 am to 4:15 pm. We will open our doors for students at 8:00 am. We will have staff members on duty starting at this time to ensure student and campus safety. Students who arrive at this time will be able to sit and wait in the cafeteria. We will dismiss students to their first period class at 8:45 am. If a student needs to arrive to campus prior to 8:00 am, they may wait on the benches along the carpool lane. Students who arrive early for sports or clubs will be given guidance by their coach, director, or sponsor.
All students need to exit the building no later than 4:45 pm unless under the supervision of a staff member.
Student ID Badges
Per PISD policy, all students in grades 9-12 will be required to wear school identification (ID) cards while on school grounds, at after-school activities, and while aboard District school buses. Student IDs and lanyards will be distributed the week of school picture day. It is the expectation that ID cards are visible and worn around the neck on a lanyard. Consequences will be given for not wearing a student ID in the prescribed manner. Lost or damaged student ID cards will be replaced for a fee of $10. We appreciate your support and understanding as we continue to implement this safety & security initiative!
Drop-Off Table, Deliveries, and Federal Food Guidelines
We would like to make everyone aware that the drop-off table located at the Jasper front doors is an unsupervised area. Jasper's staff does not have the capacity to supervise the table or monitor items that become missing. We strongly suggest parents that want to bring food to their students wait and hand deliver the food to their student. If not, there are other options the student can utilize like bringing their lunch or purchasing a lunch from our school cafeteria.
In order to avoid disrupting classes, flowers, balloons, food, and gifts cannot be accepted during the school day (this includes UberEats, Grub Hub, Door Dash, etc.). All vendors will be turned away. No vendor should attempt to drop food off in the south student entry way. In addition, these items cannot be carried with the students to class. Personal messages are not delivered to students during the instructional day.
Per Federal Nutritional Guidelines, food that is brought to school cannot be shared with other students. Parents cannot bring extra drinks and food for anyone other than their student. This applies even on birthdays and special occasions.
Student Insurance
Student insurance is available for purchase through Markel Insurance Company. Parents may enroll students in the voluntary student accident insurance using the online enrollment process. Markel has dedicated a secure enrollment website at http://markel.sevencorners.com. Please see the documents below for additional details.
Join PTSA Today
Why join PTA? Since we don’t hold traditional fundraisers at Jasper, our membership dollars are key to supporting all the wonderful activities and services offered each year. Membership dollars help fund classroom educational supplies wish list items, student programs, teacher conference registrations, parent education programs, teacher appreciation luncheons, and special amenities throughout the building. This year, we would like to see 100% parent participation in membership. This may be a lofty goal, but everyone can benefit from being a PTA member. . Sign up at www.jasperptsa.org.

PTSA National Reflections Program
Jasper PTSA is proud to once again sponsor National PTA Reflections program. Through the program, students create and submit original works of art in the medium of their choice— dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts — reflecting on theme “Look Within”. There also is a special artist division option for students with disabilities to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in the program. Students who participate will have the chance to showcase their arts during Jasper PTSA General Meeting on January 22, 2019.
The participating student or at least one person from their primary household must be a current member of the Jasper PTSA in order to participate; please go to jasperptsa.org to join PTA today if you haven't already done so. Please contact Carrie Flores at membership@jasperptsa.org for questions about membership ONLY.
The deadline for all Reflections projects is October 25, 2019. Please drop off your entry at the Attendance Office.
