NYC Schools Health Policy updates effective March 7, 2022
Mask Policy Updates
We are pleased to announce that, face coverings will be optional on school grounds for students in kindergarten through grade 12 beginning Monday, March 7.
To maintain the safety of our staff and students, we will continue to practice strict COVID-19 protocols, including increased ventilation, a daily health screening, and test kit distribution. Mask-wearing will become optional indoors, outside, and on school buses. Anyone who chooses to wear a mask may continue to do so, and your child may request a mask from their school if they need one.
In addition, any staff member or student in grades Kindergarten or higher returning on Day 6 following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis or after having COVID-19 symptoms without testing is still required to wear a well-fitting mask at all times on school property through Day 10.
Masks are strongly recommended for any staff member or student who knows they have been exposed to COVID-19 within the previous 10 days. Mask wearing is still required in medical rooms and nurses’ offices, as well as in School Based Health Centers. Nurses will have masks on hand for anyone entering who may need one.
Social Distancing
There are no requirements for social distancing in public spaces, including classrooms, cafeterias and auditoriums
Visitor Policy
Visitors are still required to show proof of vaccination and complete the daily health screening (healthscreening.schools.nyc) before entering a DOE building.
Vaccination
As a reminder, vaccination is the best tool we have to fight COVID-19 and to keep our schools safe for all our students. Children ages 5 and older are eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19. If your child is eligible but not yet vaccinated against COVID-19, you can make an appointment for vaccination at (vaccinefinder.nyc.gov) or call 311 to find a vaccine site near you. The vaccine is free for all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration or insurance status. We thank you for your continued partnership.

March Advisory Theme
Service Credits for Arista
Volunteer work provides a bounty of positive benefits to the volunteer and the community served. It provides a sense of cohesiveness and establishes a strong foundation for the many events that are held at our school. Each year, students are provided with an opportunity to be recognized for their volunteer efforts. School Service Credits are a way to recognize this dedication and to thank them for assisting in making our school a wonderful place. The following provides you with an outline of how service credits are handled within our school. The outline is as follows:
Binders for the Service Record Cards were distributed during the fall to each Advisory Class. The Advisory Class Teacher maintains the Service Record Cards on a weekly basis. Students may submit service credit slips to their Advisory Class teacher at any time.
Teachers receive “Service Credit Slips” that are used for a variety of service credit opportunities. The “Service Credit Slip” is then given to the student who will present it to their Advisory Class teacher.
Students will receive their Service Record Card in Advisory Class on Thursday, April 7, 2022. The record card will be maintained in their possession and will not be taken out in class until instructed by the teacher. Teachers have set aside time to distribute and update service credits.
Monitorial/Office Service will be given by the appropriate staff.
Upon the completion of these activities, all cards must be returned to the Advisory Teacher on Thursday, April 14, 2022.
Students are required to achieve twenty five (25) service credits per year in order to qualify for Honor Society, Junior Arista or Arista. Please note that there will not be a Service Record Award Ceremony this year.
NYC School's Survey due March 24th
For the first time this year, families can access the survey by logging into their NYC Schools Account (NYCSA). You can also take the survey by going to www.nycschoolsurvey.org. Parents/Guardians need only their child’s nine-digit Student Identification (OSIS) Number to complete the survey. Parents will enter a lowercase “f” and their child’s nine-digit OSIS number as the survey code (e.g., f123456789) to complete their unique survey. Families can find their student’s ID number on a report card, a student ID card, or in their NYC Schools Account (NYCSA). Surveys are completely confidential. Our goal is to have 100% student and parent survey participation. An email with all information was sent home to families last week. Any questions you can contact our Parent Coordinator Linda Taccetta at 718-601-6343, EXT 1071

Family Guide to State Tests 2021-2022
The annual New York State English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics tests for students in grades 3-8 will be administered to all students later this spring. These tests are required by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and are designed to provide important information about whether students are prepared to progress through school and graduate with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning skills they need for long-term success in school, college, careers, and life.
These tests are just one of several measures our schools use to assess student progress: grades, report cards, writing samples, projects, assignments, and other performance-based student work are equally important.

8th Grade Senior Update II
Hello again, families of the Paulo Class of 2022. On the heels of the news regarding the lifting of mask mandates, we look forward to sharing some updates and reminders pertaining to culminating senior events here at Paulo.
But first, prior to the February mid-winter recess, our eighth graders participated in a highly engaging and cooperative game show assembly. This was such a great experience for our seniors, who missed the opportunity for such social and lively interactions during much of their middle school years. It was refreshing to see them laugh, cheer, compete, and just be kids in a wholesome and united way. Events like these are what makes middle school at Paulo so special, and something our students will hopefully fondly look back upon when they recall their adolescent years. We are currently planning and look forward to a similarly fun and energetic assembly in the spring.
Graduation Update
Our goal with regard to graduation is to recognize our seniors’ accomplishments in a way that not only ensures the safety and health of those who attend, but in a manner befitting their diligence, resolve, and achievements, especially over the course of the last several years. With this in mind, we are planning two in–person, outdoor ceremonies to be held in our schoolyard, for students and two guests/family members per graduate/family only. The ceremonies will take place at 9:00AM and 12:00PM on Wednesday, June 22, with Thursday, June 23 and Friday, June 24 are set aside as rain dates, if needed. As we implemented last year, a Google form will be shared as we get closer to the event to enable families to register for either ceremony. To be clear, families will be able to choose either the morning or afternoon ceremony, on a first come-first serve basis.
Under current DOE guidance, masks are no longer required nor is proof of vaccination necessary. Should anything change is this regard, you will be notified. Additional details regarding the ceremonies are forthcoming.
Senior Dues
The deadline to pay senior dues has been extended through the end of March. The cost of senior dues covers setup and materials that make our graduation ceremony beautiful and special. This includes your child’s graduation gown, diploma and diploma case, awards and certificates, graduation tickets (2 per family), and the graduate lawn/window signs. Senior dues also include the two t-shirts, various special assemblies, the yearbook, and many other incidental but essential materials that make your child’s senior year memorable. Payment of senior dues can be made via our website at https://www.is75.org/ under the School Store/Online Payments tab. If you have any questions concerning the dues or activities planned, please reach out to our senior events coordinators, Ms. LaRocca or Ms. Boshnack, via PupilPath, or feel free to contact us at 718-701-634.
Senior Trip
As of this writing, our senior trip to Six Flags in Jackson, NJ on June 3 is a go! Coach buses have been secured, and all students who attend must wear their senior tee (which they will receive shortly beforehand). Students will receive transportation to and from Six Flags, an admission ticket and meal voucher. Please visit our website to complete the parent/guardian consent form and remit payment. Specifics are outlined in the attached letter.
Yearbook Ads
In case anyone has missed our previous correspondence regarding placing a yearbook ad, see the website and note the firm deadline of March 14, 2022. Click this link to get started
Senior Awards
To recognize our future graduates who have earned special distinction over the course of their three years at Paulo, we will be also be hosting a special senior awards ceremony. Unless DOE guidance on visitor restrictions/vaccination status changes, the senior awards ceremony will be held during the school day in our auditorium with students only, and will be live-streamed for families. The date for this special event is still to be determined and will be communicated at a later time.
Arista (tentative date is Friday, May 20)
Unless DOE guidance on visitor restrictions changes, the grade eight Arista ceremony will be held in our auditorium for students only, and will be live-streamed for families. Details on this event, including notification of eligible candidates will be shared in due time via our Arista coordinator, Ms. Jeannine Valenti. Keep in mind, for the 2021-22 school year, Arista eligibility requires the following:
1. Scholarship – Academic average of at least 91.00% in each marking period with no grade, in any subject, below 80 or “S”. Please note that a single course grade of 79 or lower precludes a student from Arista.
2. Citizenship – No citizenship grade below “S” (Satisfactory) in any marking period.
3. Service – The attainment of at least 25 service credits per school year.
Of note, for your convenience, all Class of 2022 updates are also posted on our school website under the Parents tab, under the Class of 2022 Updates dropdown.
Again, you can and should expect periodic updates related to culminating events as the school year winds down. Please know we strive to ensure our 8th graders look back upon their middle school years fondly and with pride, and finish on a positive note. We will continue to do what we can to make the best out of the circumstances. In this respect, we appreciate your patience, understanding and support over the course of your child’s last few months here at Paulo.
As always, we would like to thank you for your continued cooperation and support of the many once-in-a-lifetime activities to come. If you have any questions concerning the dues or activities planned, please reach out to our senior events coordinators, Ms. LaRocca or Ms. Boshnack, via PupilPath, or feel free to contact us at 718-701-6343.
We look forward to a memorable year for our graduating class of 2022!
