BBCHS production of Steel Magnolia shines on stage and raises money for juvenile diabetes
The cast and crew of the BBCHS production of "Steel Magnolias" performed from
April 19 - 22 and the cast of 6 BBCHS actresses wowed audiences every night! The show took the opportunity to make an impact on and off the stage. As the subject of type 1 diabetes was personal for certain cast members and their families, the cast of "Steel Magnolias" asked audiences to donate through a split the pot raffle. After four performances, the generous audiences raised over $750 to be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation!
BBCHS Grad and musician, Brandon Mendenhall, gives back to a BBCHS student.
2002 BBCHS graduate, Brandon Mendenhall, has been working hard after leaving high school to progress in his music career and was wanting to give back to a BBCHS student that could benefit from a specialty shoe. Brandon Mendenhall was born with cerebral palsy – a neurological condition that affects movement, coordination and balance – and taught himself how to play guitar after high school despite having limited movement in the left side of his body. Mendenhall worked hard finding solutions to his physical limitations and developed a unique playing style that became his signature. In 2008, Brandon formed a band, The Mendenhall Experiment and released his debut self-titled EP, which features A Perfect Circle alumni Danny Lohner and Munky from Korn. Over the years the band has had many line ups, and in 2014, Mendenhall found what he described as " the golden line - up" - a talented group of passionate musicians that bring a positive message to their audience.
The Mendenhall Experiment seeks to inspire change in the way the world initially perceives those with developmental disabilities from negative to positive. Brandon stated, “The Mendenhall Experiment is my literal experiment to see if I, ‘the kid with cerebral palsy’ from small-town Illinois could move to Los Angeles, survive, write a batch of songs, form a band, and then elevate that band to a national level of success in today’s music world"
The Mendenhall Experiment has built quite the resume and has played shows supporting National Acts such as Adema, POD, Alien Ant Farm, Kill Devil Hill, Smile Empty Soul, Saliva, Fear Factory, Ill Nino, Straight Line Stitch, Girl on Fire and opened for Monster Energy's Aftershock Festival in Sacramento featuring Korn, Megadeth, 5FDP, A7X and many more.
"That's my main goal with music, if you asked me why I should be signed or why I want to be a Rock Star; it's not about the fame or money, sure those things are nice and it's great to make a living playing music doing what I love, but that's not why I want it... I have a unique opportunity to inspire people and kids with disabilities with my playing, my music and my story! I truly believe that's what I was put on this earth to do. We are starting to see the impact of our mission to inspire others on a consistent basis at our shows and appearances, Our fans and supporters approach us giving us their personal testimonies and praise about how we are touching their lives and the lives of others with disabilities. I am confident that as The Mendenhall Experiment brand continues to grow and see greater success, We can begin to inspire people on a global scale, touching not only the lives of individuals but changing the global perception of people with disabilities as well".
Now through Brandon's success, he has taken an opportunity to give back to the BBCHS family by donating a pair of specialty made Lebron Basketball shoes! These shoes are custom made to have velcro instead of laces, and be easier to get on and off. BBCHS student Donnie Keller was the lucky recipient of these shoes and is very excited to wear them and tell Brandon's story!

Phil Hoffman awarded the BBCHS 2018 Friends of Education Award
In the nomination, Jenny stated, "We are truly grateful for Phil’s level of commitment to our school and his willingness to volunteer his time, especially during some of our most vulnerable moments. When we lost our good friend, Mr. Breeden, they were ready to meet our need within a moment’s notice and spent the entire afternoon with our students and staff in the library for grief support. Maggie and Abbey may be the stars of the show, but Phil’s commitment to us has been a godsend. The sense of calm and comfort he brings to our visits allows students to connect with him and his dogs in a meaningful and impactful way." Thank you, Phil, for being a great Friend of Education to BBCHS.

Gift of Hope table for National Donor Awareness Month
April is National Donate Life Month. Each April, we celebrate to raise awareness about the benefits of organ donation and honor the donors who have given the gift of life. On Tuesday April 24th the Nurse’s office set up education tables in the main lobby 2nd hour through 7th hour to help Spread Awareness about Organ Donation and Transplantation. Students were allowed to pick up free give-a-ways as well as speak with Nurse Kidd’s daughter who recently received a heart and liver transplant. As of this January 1st 2018, young women and young men who are 16 and 17 years old are now able to express their wishes by signing up as organ and tissue donors through the Secretary of State.
