WSD News
November 2021
Dear WSD Community,
I hope all of you had a happy Halloween! As we move into November, I often begin reflecting on what I am grateful for, and certainly being superintendent of this wonderful school district is at the top of my list. I want to thank all of you for what you do here to make Waterford School District a place where our students can feel inspired, educated and empowered. WSD is a leader in Oakland County because of the people we have here doing the tough, behind-the-scenes work and I appreciate each of you.
I also want to make this community aware that, this month, many staff and administrators, as well as the Board of Education, myself, and Cabinet have committed to doing some professional development surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion. Addressing the learning environment and culture is a key goal named in our strategic plan, and, more importantly, doing this type of work helps to ensure all students have access to the opportunities, supports, technologies and materials that will encourage their growth and learning. It also goes without saying, we want each and every student, staff member and family to feel accepted and respected within WSD.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving and especially your families. And again, thank you for your commitment to Waterford.
Scott A. Lindberg, Superintendent
Problem-based learning (PBL)
At the beginning of this school year, fourth graders from Donelson Hills and Schoolcraft each began their PBL journey by designing their classroom in the most meaningful way to positively impact their learning. Students in Jenifer Janczarek and Elizabeth Robertson’s class started by asking the question, “How can we design a classroom where everyone feels safe and happy?” Students began with considering the physical space in the classroom and were empowered to arrange it in a way they felt best supported their learning. Students then tackled creating a list of classroom norms and promises, connecting to the concepts of the class preamble and constitution, in which they could all agree to live by, in order to promote a culture that will support the success of everyone in the class.
Pierce Students Get Moving!
Students at Pierce Middle School participated in a mountain bike fitness program during Physical Education (PE) class. The bikes were attained through grant money from the Specialized Foundation and the Waterford Foundation for Education and are now a permanent part of the PE program at Pierce.
