A Note from Ms. Ellison

Dear Glen Grove Families,

I hope that you are all staying cozy and finding some joy in all of this snow! We are eager for warmer weather to get our students back outside playing during recess. As long as the weather is above ten degrees including the windchill we will send them outside. Please make sure to send them with their winter gear!

Many thanks to the PTA for bringing another cultural arts assembly to our students. Our students will be enjoying a virtual performance of The Evolution of African-American Music: From Africa to Hip Hop. We are excited to be kicking off Black History month with this great assembly. Make sure to ask your child about it at the end of the week!

It is hard to believe that conferences are around this corner. For this round of conferences, we will be offering parent choice for either in person or zoom. Please work with your classroom teacher to schedule this important opportunity to connect and collaborate around your child’s progress.

As you know, we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day at Glen Grove. This is a day we will focus on kindness and friendship. Your child’s teacher will reach out with more details for their specific class; however, schoolwide we are asking that you not send food or candy treats with your child.

Thanks for all that you are doing to support your child and Glen Grove school. We are grateful for your partnership. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Thanks,

Kate Ellison

The Food Services department is experiencing unprecedented staff shortages. To continue to provide meals to students in this environment, we may need to adjust to a limited menu, removing the hot entree option. This change may happen on any given day, at one or multiple schools. We will provide information to families at a particular school if this does happen, though communication may occur on short notice.

We appreciate your understanding!

Dress for the Weather Every Day

Be sure to check the weather report to make sure your child has everything they need to be warm and dry!

Please note that if there is snow on the ground, recess is as follows:

  • Boots and snowpants - may play in the fields
  • Boots only - must stay on the woodchips (can play on equipment)
  • No boots - must stay on the blacktop

If your child wears boots to school, don't forget to pack gym shoes.

From the Nurse's Office

If you need any help or support during this difficult time of the pandemic, please do not hesitate to call Jennifer Hastings, RN, our Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394.

All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:45 a.m. at (847) 657-2394. The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.

If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m. please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.

Mandatory Health Forms for 2022-2023 Incoming 6th Graders

All incoming 6th grade students MUST have a physical examination (within the last 12 months), including required vaccinations, turned in prior to August 25, 2022. Your child will NOT be able to start middle school until the physical form is turned in. If your child's health forms are already complete, you can turn them into the Glen Grove health office any time between now and the last day of school. They will be forwarded to your child's middle school with their health file. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Hastings, Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394. Staffing Shortages: How You Can Help

District 34 still is experiencing critical staffing shortages and the need for substitute teachers continues to be high. Becoming a short-term substitute teacher is one easy way to help our schools and students. A short-term substitute teacher only needs:

  • 60 university/college credits in any content area
  • To complete a required three-hour training ($25)
  • Get a Short-Term Sub license with ISBE ($25)

The North Cook Intermediate Service Center (our regional office of education) is hosting a session of the required training on March 4, 2022 from 12:00-3:30 p.m on Zoom. Preregistration is required. Register here.

Once you have your license, fill out the substitute application here.

Please contact Veronica Kagan if you have any questions regarding the District 34 application.

News from the LRC

Overdue Books

Overdue notices are sent weekly to students' email accounts. Students can check their Destiny Discover accounts at any time to see what they currently have checked out or overdue. Also, students can renew titles one time on Destiny. If a title needs to be renewed more than once, the student needs to bring the book to the library so that we can renew it for them. Parents receive overdue notices once a month and do not need to respond to the notice unless they have a question about the overdue title(s).

Books that are 60 days overdue will be considered lost. We ask that parents pay for the lost book(s) with a check payable to Glen Grove School. If the book(s) is found within the current school year, we are happy to refund the money. The cost of the book(s) is included in the overdue notice. Any questions, please contact the LRC Associate, Mrs. Pam Duby, she is happy to assist you.

Need a Book?

Please stop by Glen Grove School at any time to visit our Little Free Library located outside the school to the right of the front doors. Take what you need, feel free to just borrow or keep the books. Do you have books you don’t need anymore? Feel free to donate to the Little Library. We just ask that the books are in good condition for others to enjoy.

Hoodies and Snowpants and Boots - Oh My!

Our Lost and Found is located in the lunchroom - and it's filling up! If your child is missing a medium-to-large sized item - a jacket, a water bottle, hats, gloves, boots - please ask them to check there. If they are missing a smaller or valuable item - eyeglasses, jewelry, keys, phone - please have them check the Little Lost & Found in the office.

Please help us by writing your child's name on their belongings whenever possible! Thank you.
