The 35th President John F. Kennedy started the JFK space program in Cape Canaveral, Florida. He made the program to get to space before the Russians did. They wanted to get a man in space first, because if the Russians got there first they would put up satellites and stuff like that. Kennedy Space Center spreads across 219 square miles (567 square kilometers) on Merritt Island, just northwest of Florida's Cape Canaveral. In the year 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced to Congress his goal of sending an American to the moon by the end of the decade.On April 12, 1961, the Soviet Union had become the first country to send a man into space with the successful mission of Yuri Gagarin in the spacecraft Vostok 1. Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong became the first human being to walk on the moon.

Impact
JFK's space program that started back in 1962. Has a lasting impact today because they have successfully went up in to space and attracted tourist. Now they put on tours and rocket launching shows to make money for the space center. Today there is a space center in Cape Canaveral, Florida named after John F. Kennedy the man who started the space program and now its a place where all ages of people can visit and learn about space. JFK said "We chose to go to the moon."
