Friday Family Message
Hello Families!
Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s message. We are heading into the final week of the semester. Reaching the halfway point of the school year is significant. Our students and staff have worked hard over the past four months and we look forward to the fresh start that the second semester will bring. Thank you for encouraging your students to finish strong!
Why are some messages vague?
We often receive questions on why our messages to families related to student safety are vague in terms of sharing details. We wanted to share some context with you on that question. When a school or a school district receives a threat, our first response is to immediately call law enforcement and/or 911. Once this call is made — and law enforcement responds to a call — they essentially take control of the situation, the details, and what information is shared with families and the public. This is not done to prevent families from knowing the details of an issue, but rather to allow law enforcement to quickly and efficiently determine the validity and next steps. Often this includes pursuing the individual that made a threat, and public sharing of details can get in the way of that work.
The school district is not an investigatory body for threats or other criminal matters. Our top priority is student and staff safety, and we do this best by cooperating and following law enforcement’s lead. This includes, sometimes, not sharing some information that they are currently investigating.
Parent forum on inclusionary practices
Parents of students in special education are invited to participate in a discussion forum from 6:30-7:30 p.m. February 22 in the boardroom at the district office. The main topic will be inclusionary practices, though other topics will be discussed.
This will be an opportunity to talk with district administrators about program successes and challenges around inclusion for special education students in the general education environment.
Can’t make it? Don’t worry! Another parent discussion forum on the same topic is scheduled for May 3.
