Principal's Message

Tēnā koutou katoa – Warmest greetings to you all.

We have had a great start to the term. The children are settled and making the most of all of their learning opportunities.

This year we have been working really hard as a team to improve the quality of writing across our school. We have worked with a facilitator to ensure we are targeting specific children and their ability to write purposeful pieces of writing which can be enjoyed by their audience.

Please keep encouraging your child to practise their writing skills at home. This could be in the form of a letter, postcard or email to a friend or family member.

You can also help your child by supporting them and being excited by their learning.

In each newsletter over this term I will give you some ideas that can be used at home according to the age and / or stage of your child:

Year 0/1 (Ngahere Hub) - Make writing fun

  • Help your child write a letter of the alphabet, then go letter hunting in your house or in a book to find that letter.
  • Let your child see you writing
  • Encourage them to write shopping lists or make birthday cards
  • Water and a paintbrush on a dry path and a stick on sand are fun ways to write letters and words.

Don't worry if your child's letters or words are sometimes backwards or misspelt at this age. The important thing is that they have fun writing and making an effort.

Give them reasons to write

  • Write to each other. Write notes to your child and leave them in interesting places, like their lunch box. Ask them to write a reply.
  • Help them email, text or write to family, whanau or friends.
  • Work with them to put labels on special things - like the door to their room or their toy box.

Display their work. Put it on the fridge. Be proud of it. Share it with others.

Talk about their writing

  • Talk about the letters in your child's name and where the name comes from.
  • Help them create a scrapbook with pictures. Encourage them to write stories under the pictures and talk to you about them.
  • Ask them to write about pictures they draw - on paper or on the computer. Or get them to tell you the story and you write it under the picture.

Talk to your child about what they write. Be interested. If you don't understand what your child's picture is about, ask them to tell you about it.

Encourage Writing

  • Have felt pens, crayons and paper available
  • Put magnetic letters on the fridge - ask what words they can make with the letters.

Finally, thank you to our wonderful parents, caregivers and whanau who are giving up their time to support our Touch Rugby teams as either coaches or team managers. We could not provide the children with these opportunities in the sport arena without this essential support.

MUFTI DAY - Get Spotted Melanoma Awareness Week

This is for Melanoma Awareness Week. Children can dress up in anything that is sunsmart (a bit like going to the beach!) They can wear brightly coloured spotted clothes, rash shirts, sun hats, sunglasses. Children to bring $2 for mufti Day. All proceeds to Melanoma New Zealand.

Get Spotted Melanoma Awareness Week

Help make a difference by raising awareness of melanoma in New Zealand.

Encourage your family and friends to take care of their skin in the sun and to check their skin regularly for any changes.

Melanoma New Zealand is the only charity organisation dedicated to preventing avoidable deaths and suffering from melanoma, by:

  • Providing information about all aspects of melanoma
  • Promoting regular skin checks for early detection
  • Advocating for increased access to high quality clinical care

If melanoma is recognised and treated early enough it is almost always curable.

UNDERSTAND MELANOMA: have you got questions about melanoma – what is it, how is it treated, what are the possible signs and what can we do to help prevent melanoma.

Check out the Melanoma website for more information.
