FULMORE MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
WEEK OF 5-2-2016
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Greetings Falcon Families!
The following students will be honored at the Austin ISD Latino Academic Achievement Award Ceremony next week. We are thrilled that so many outstanding Falcons will be recognized. Hats off to you! For outstanding GPA: Cassandra, Robert, Noemy, Paul, Claire, and Austin. For Outstanding Academic Progress in the ESL Program, Alexander. For Young Latino Leader, Ximena. Congratulations Falcons!
This past week marked the annual Band Solo and Ensemble Festival, which featured all Advanced Band and Beginning Band students. We are very proud of the hard work and effort that everyone put forth to prepare, as well as the confidence and courage that it took to perform. For the first time, all of the small ensembles from Wind Ensemble earned top ratings of Superior from our guest judges. Way to go Falcon Band!
Today Fulmore students and faculty celebrated National College Signing Day by wearing college and university shirts. We are proud to celebrate #AISDProud students as they take next steps to realize their futures and support a culture of college readiness!
STAAR testing is right around the corner and we want to give a few reminders to families. Students have exactly four hours to take a STAAR test, and it is imperative that students pace themselves to take advantage of the four hours. Also, students should get approximately ten hours of sleep each night and eat a balanced diet to have a healthy brain. We are proud of the efforts our students have been making in the classroom and during testing, and want this level of commitment to continue through the end of the school year.
Here are several tips parents can follow to prepare their child for successful testing:
· Set a regular bed time that allows ten hours of sleep each night. To get a good night’s rest only before the test is not good enough; sleep habits must be regular.
· Have a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of water.
· Talk with your child about the importance of doing his/her best at all times. Extra attention to details during assessments is a must! Assessments are an opportunity for students to show off what they know and an opportunity for teachers to see strengths and/or note areas of growth that are still needed for instructional purposes.
· Encourage your child to take his/her time during assessments; however, day dreaming and napping are not acceptable. STAAR is a timed test, and we want students to get in the practice of self-pacing.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

PTA Update
Please mark your calendars for next week, May 2-6, which is Teacher Appreciation Week. PTA is leading an effort to show the Fulmore Middle School teachers how much we appreciate them! Here is the schedule:
· Monday, May 2—Keep our classrooms healthy during allergy season! Bring in tissues, hand sanitizer or wipes to stock the classrooms.
· Tuesday, May 3—Keep on writing! Teachers run out of pens, pencils, and especially dry-erase markers. Consider re-stocking for next year!
· Wednesday, May 4—Get creative! Write a poem or a song or draw a picture or cartoon of a favorite topic from this year for your teacher!
· Thursday, May 5— Show off your baking skills! Bring teachers cookies, brownies or favorite treats!
· Friday, May 6—Write a thank-you note to one teacher or all your teachers! Tell them how much you’ve learned from them!
