Middle School HEA Updates!
HEA Math: We are currently studying functions with a focus on linear functions. We are attempting to investigate how functions are used in our everyday lives; such as our cable bill, electric bill, going to a fast-food restaurant, and our cell phone bill & usage plans. Next we will focus on graphing linear functions so we can make predictions based on the mathematical rules used in our everyday lives. During the second nine weeks, the HEA students will determine what project we will undertake as our hands-on project (right now making corn-hole boards are leading the way). I look forward to seeing what interests the students and how they will use math in the project they select.
HEA Language Arts:
In Language Arts, we just finished reading some works by Edgar Allan Poe, and we learned how the Baltimore Ravens got their team name. This week the students are reading several short-stories with surprise endings. Students are practicing skills on identifying figurative language, foreshadowing, theme, and mood. Students are also perfecting their ability to make inferences based on their understanding of the stories we are reading. Next week students will use their understanding of short stories and create their own story with a surprise ending.
In HRT class, we are discussing the importance of “Teamwork.” With the start of the NFL football season, we have started our very own Fantasy Football project. Students created their own team name and picked three players for their team. These players included a quarterback, wide receiver and a running back. Each week students do their math calculations to see how many points they received. The first 4 students to reach the end zone with 100 points will be placed in the playoff bracket to see who wins the project. During this time we have done many assignments in pairs or teams to learn the importance of working together.
