Principal's Point
Classroom Valentine's Day parties for grades K-5 are scheduled for Friday, February 14th! Please remember that all edible treats must be store bought and in their original packaging with nutritional information visible. If your child is in a peanut/tree nut free classroom, please be extra vigilant in making sure that your treats do not contain allergens. Even treats made in facilities where nuts are used in other recipes cannot be served in some of our classrooms. If you have any questions about whether your treats are okay, please check with us before the party.
Information about our 4 & 5 grades Valentine's Day Dance and our 6-8 grades Winter Jam events can be found below. Please make sure your student has a signed permission slip submitted by the February 13th deadline. All proceeds go towards our 8th grade fundraising.
In honor of President's Day, school will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2020.

Stay Healthy Tips
We are in the time of year when viruses flourish in the community. We encourage everyone to help reduce the risk of infection by following these guidelines:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially before eating, after changing diapers, or after using the restroom. If soap and water are not available use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and put your used tissue in the waste basket. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands.
- Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.
- Stay home when feeling sick, and consult their health care provider as needed. Children with cold like symptoms that experience difficulty breathing should consult their health care provider for further evaluation.
- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as handrails and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
- Students with a temperature of 100.0 or above should remain home until fever free for 24 hours without fever lowering medication.
In addition, we encourage vaccination against influenza, it isn’t too late

Camp Invention is returning to SVA!
During this program, young innovators will:
- Build a cityscape out of upcycled materials, navigate planes through a storm and take apart a robot they'll bring home at the end of the program.
- Learn the value of their creativity as they sketch and build prototypes, design logos, market their invention and protect their intellectual property.
- Collaborate and discover solutions to protect the Earth's ecosystems as they compete in zipline races, explore energy conservation and help wildlife habitats.
- Discover the great inventors behind their favorite sports, play high-energy games and design the ultimate sports complex.
Camp Invention's activities give participants the opportunity to explore, create and build confidence as they bring their biggest ideas to life.
Local educators facilitate the program and enthusiastic high school students serve as Leadership Interns, ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.
Register using promo code INNOVATE30 to save $30 off (expires 2/11), SUM25 to save $25 (expires 3/31) or SUM 15 to save $15 (expires 5/12) off the $235 registration fee. Availability is limited. Visit invent.org/camp or call 800-968-4332 to secure your child's spot today!
Lady Longhorns Softball
The Longhorns have heard your feedback, and we are ready to help. Beginning in Spring ’20, we will be helping the future softball players in NKY get the experience that has been missing in recent years. We are looking for girls in the general age range of 4-13, that are looking for a local softball option this coming spring/summer. Depending on the interest across the various age ranges, we will determine the right game schedule, leagues, and practice sessions. The goal will be to have games & practices played locally in the Villa Hills area. Perhaps most exciting, we will have access to some of the local high school softball programs, including Notre Dame & Villa Madonna, for coaching clinics, pitching clinics, player development clinics & special events at Varsity softball games. If you have a daughter and are interested in learning more as we get closer to Spring ‘20, please send an email villahillslonghorns@gmail.com with your daughter’s name & age.
Registration Details:

MyBusBuddie App
Parents and guardians interested in the status of the bus that transports their children can access a mobile app, MyBusBuddie via a smart phone, laptop, or home PC (as long as the device has Internet connectivity and can access the Web). If there is a question on the status of a particular bus, MyBusBuddie app will display the current status and location of that bus. Should the transportation department wish to inform users of a significant delay for a bus or all buses, this app can show the anticipated delay time, i.e. one hour delay due to weather. While everything possible is done to assure that the buses operate on schedule, situations arise that can cause delays in their arrival times at a student’s stop. If you should need further information about your child's bus status after checking MyBusBuddie app, please contact the Transportation Department at 859-356-0253.

SVA's Cell Phone Usage and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Policy:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IQtsLmnaT56Fif0swATynhQvTl2swSXM
This school year, SVA is allowing students in grades 4-8 to bring in school approved devices for classroom usage. With the continued support of our PTSA, we are moving closer and closer to 1:1 for our students but are not quite there yet. Recommended devices for students include Chromebooks and laptops. Information and permission forms will be sent home with all students in grades 4-8 or you can access the forms at bit.ly/SVABYOD if this is a program you want your child to participate in. Cell phones and tabletsare not recommended as a BYOD for educational purposes and therefore will not be an approved device. Cell phones and tablets are to be left in student backpacks/lockers during the school day unless directed by teacher for classroom use. We will review this change with students and teach new procedures at the start of this school year. We appreciate your help in reminding your child that cell phones should be off and stored in their backpacks/lockers at the start of the school day and should be taken home with them at dismissal. All communication to your child during the school day regarding changes in transportation for dismissal should be done through the main office.
