NORTH NEWS March 7th
Where tradition began, excellence continues.
Shawnee Mission North High School
Message from Principal David Ewers
I know that the recent events at Olathe East are on everyone’s mind. We are keeping the Olathe East community in our thoughts. We have daily safety measures in place in Shawnee Mission. I wanted to take a moment to remind you of the measures.
All exterior doors are locked once school starts, and those doors remain locked all day. The doors are monitored throughout the day to make sure they are secure. Once all buses have arrived and school begins, the entrances are secured. Once school starts, anyone wanting to enter the building must enter at the main entrance and use the buzzer system. The individual must show identification and have a specific reason for needing access to the building.
We are so fortunate to have Officer Covington and Officer Whisenhunt as our full-time School Resource Officers. They, and Officer Vega, are vigilant throughout the day to monitor cameras, check doors, be visible in the hall and most importantly, make positive connections with students. I see students having conversations with these two officers on a daily basis.
We routinely have conversations with students about why we keep the building secure. This includes discussing why we don’t prop doors open or why we don’t open doors for our friends. During the school day, every student needs to enter the building through the front secured doors and utilize their school IDs. We also remind them of the importance of letting us know if they hear something that may be concerning that involves our school. We believe that it is important to have ongoing conversations such as this with students and encourage you to have these same conversations with them at home.
Thank you for all of your support. Let's have a great final week of the third quarter!

NEWS & UPDATES FROM SM NORTH
No Parking on Foster
The Overland Park Police Department has received many complaints about several cars violating the "No parking" signs on Foster. The no parking signs apply to both sides of the street on Foster at Johnson Drive. While we understand construction near the fieldhouse makes dismissal meet ups difficult, there are plenty of legal parking spaces in the lower lot just east of the tennis courts. Our community residents who live in the area are having a difficult time getting to their driveways safely at dismissal time. OPMC 12.04.096 parking in violation of a sign is a $60 citation. Please pass this information along to anyone who picks up your student as we would like to avoid unnecessary tickets to our school community.
Thanks, SRO Covington
4th Quarter After School Tutoring
Students are invited to stay after school on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Learning Commons for after school tutoring. Five staff members are available for support, including one teacher from each of the core subjects- math, ELA, science, and social studies. Free meals are available for all students at 3:00pm in the cafeteria and free rides home within the North area boundaries at 4:30pm. 4th quarter dates begin on March 23rd.
****SENIORS & PARENTS - GRADUATION*****

REQUIRED VACCINATIONS
Thank you to all parents who have turned in updated vaccination records for our SMN students!
We still have quite a few students who are missing at least one vaccine.
Please help us out in the nurse’s office and send any updated vaccine records to valsnow@smsd.org .
Our next exclusion date for SMSD is coming up quickly in January.
PLEASE, if you’ve been emailed or contact by phone about a missing vaccine, try to get that done as soon as possible.
Our Johnson County Health Department is a good resource for updating vaccines, as is Walgreens, CVS, Mercy and Truth Clinics.
Vaccines can also be obtained at our Health Partnership Clinic at SMW on Thursdays during clinic hours from 11am to 3pm
