Message From Principal Engdall

Big picture

Greetings Shaw Montessori,

BLAZING STARS we had a fabulous Fun/Color Run! Thank you so much for coming and supporting our children and community. While we have not gotten the final tally or profit as pledging closes on October 5th, I can tell you this is the biggest fundraiser that this community has ever held! We appreciate your support. The staff will be designing a Practical Life/Makers Space tailored to our curriculum and student needs with part of the proceeds. We will keep you posted on the progress of this magical space!

Our sports teams have been playing hard! Our flag football team is now 2 and 3, our volleyball team is 1 and 3. Our football games and volleyball games will resume after autumn break with playoffs.

We look forward to seeing you on campus for Parent/Teacher Conferences this week. Teachers/students will be presenting report cards, an update on iReady usage, portfolios and reflections as well as areas of success and challenge. Your attendance is critical. You complete the golden triangle of teacher, student and parent all of which are necessary ingredients to make certain that every child achieves their full potential. If you do not yet have a scheduled conference with your child’s teacher please contact them via email.

Wishing you the very best,

Principal Engdall

Social Emotional Learning/Wellness Survey Student surveys and check-ins are a vital tool for helping schools and districts better serve your children. The collection of feedback provides invaluable insight on the experiences and needs of our students.

Schools and districts use information collected from surveys to develop resources and evaluate the efficacy of instruction, programs or policies. Our students will be asked to complete an online survey that encourages them to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning.

Topics covered include emotional regulation, self-efficacy, sense of belonging, teacher-student relationships, social perspective-taking, school climate, self-management, social awareness and school safety. The information collected will be used to guide decisions about the implementation of social-emotional learning/wellness initiatives and the impact it is having on students generally.

A copy of the survey can be found at: grades 3-5 Survey; grades 6-8 Survey

In compliance with A.R.S. 15-117, the district is required to receive parental consent for surveys that solicit personal information about students in a wide variety of categories. This means Phoenix Elementary School District must seek parent/guardian consent before administering our social-emotional learning/wellness efforts and initiatives. We value your child’s participation in this survey.

Please complete the linked permission form (below) before 10/17/2022. If you do not complete the form, your child will not be surveyed. If this form is not completed, your student will be unable to participate in the fall survey administration process.

Message From Laura Hildwein

Many students at Shaw are participating in lessons from the Second Step social-emotional learning curriculum. They have weekly lessons with Ms. Laura, the school social worker. The classes are currently working on Growth Mindset.

  • The kinders are working on skills for learning. They are learning to focus attention, listen effectively, stay on task, use positive self-talk and be assertive.
  • The lower elementary classrooms are learning about Growth Mindset and how to apply it to paying attention. They are learning how to pay attention; how to manage distractions; how to use mistakes as a learning opportunity and how to use positive self-talk.
  • The upper elementary students are learning how to plan, modify and achieve goals.
  • The middle schoolers are learning to recognize personal strengths; how to manage social challenges, how to adjust, persist or change course after making a mistake; identifying roadblocks to achieving goals and identifying appropriate strategies to respond to the roadblocks.

Ask your students what they are learning in Second Step!

Message From Nurse Rose

Note from the Nurse:

Health Screenings for Vision and Hearing are almost done. You will get a Referral Letter for Vision or Hearing if your student does not pass. Please return the completed Referral Letter to the nurse’s office so I can update my records. If a student fails hearing, I will retest them in 3-4 weeks and if they fail a 2nd time, then I will send a Hearing Referral. It’s very common for the preschool/Kdg group to fail due to a recent cold/ear infection due to fluid accumulation in the ear. This will usually resolve by the time I retest.

If you have any questions call me at 602.257.3900 Thanks! Rose RN

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is a big part of Hispanic culture. The following cultures are a part of Hispanic Heritage Month: El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Chile, Nicaragua, and Mexico. Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15 and ends on October 15. During Hispanic Heritage Month we celebrate those who have made a big impact on Latino culture.

One person we celebrate is artist Diego Rivera. Diego was born on December 8, 1886, in Guanajuato, Mexico. In 1940 he painted a mural for the Golden Gate International Exposition held in San Francisco. His last Mural was called “Popular History of Mexico”. From 1920 to 1939 he was married to artist Frida Khalo, they didn’t have the best relationship so they decided to divorce.

Other people that made an impact on the Hispanic community were Michael Rubiner and Miguel Puga, who made the first Mexican American cartoon show called “The Casagrandes”. Which first premiered on October 14, 2019 on the Nickelodeon channel. The show is a spin-off from the popular show ‘’The Loud House” since the main character Ronnie Anne was a character on that show.

Primary ODE Spotlight

Primary Garden Teacher Spotlight

This is Valerie Denoso. She is our newest hire in the ODE garden and has been part of our community with a child currently attending Shaw. Ms. Valerie has been a wonderful addition and much needed as Miss Kylie, one of our Garden Teacher‘s, will be out on maternity leave with her soon to be baby girl this December. Ms. Valerie is a peaceful presence in the garden and has a magical talent at helping some of our littlest students adjust to the challenges of school life when they come to visit the garden.

Why does Valerie love the Primary ODE?

“Working in the garden with the students has been a treat. They are full of life and imagination. Going over the process of taking care of plants with them has been a fun experience. I enjoy seeing them discover and get excited about Mother Earth.”

Some fun facts about Ms. Valerie:

She has a daughter named Sage, she has a rock collection and enjoys journaling and making jewelry in her free time. One of her favorite things is to go camping with her family and has 3 pet chickens at home.

Message From Shaw PTA

Wow! What an amazing Fun Run! And just when you thought it was over… it’s not!

Donations are accepted until October 5. It’s not just my birthday :) it’s also the last day for fun run donations, so if you are still trying to get your brother to answer the phone and make a donation, he has a deadline!

As for who will win the trophy, let me tell you, anything can happen. Right now it’s a race among Chan’s class, Ms. Robert’s class, Ms. Stephanie Van B’s class and a new contender that just raced into the mix, Ms. Church’s class! Truthfully, it’s not over until it’s over.

And by the way, 100% of the students in Ms. Church’s class has not only registered, but have pledged as well! That’s the first time that has EVER happened! Way to go! Will THEY bring home the trophy??

Plus, there’s also the individual award! Who will get their name engraved for all future Shaw kids to look at and admire? Landry Raczynski won last year. Who will it be this year? Well, let’s put it this way, there’s a Fun Run student that broke the $2k barrier! Also something that’s never happened before!

The winners will be announced at the next PTA meeting on October 19.

I am truthfully so impressed of how awesome all of our kiddos were in that heat! There were so many little red faces. In fact, that’s why we had to move the color run up! The heat was too much of a concern . So thank you to everyone who was able to be there and volunteer.

If you weren’t able to experience the fun and the color runs in person Tara Kerwin took some amazing photos and you can find them all at www.shawmontessoripta.com under the photos tab.

Thank you to everyone for making this year a record breaking year!

We have pledges from all 50 states EXCEPT VERMONT! So get on the phone to Uncle Bernie and let’s complete all 50 states!
