Class Novel
Frindle by Andrew Clements
Frindle, precocious fifth-grader Nick tries to irritate his teacher, Mrs. Granger, by inventing a new word, "frindle." The word takes off and becomes a worldwide phenomenon thanks in part to businessman Bud Lawrence, who markets frindle products and gives Nick a cut of the profits.
Reading
Students are to read 30 minutes for homework each day. They will earn points by taking quizzes on Reading Counts.
Book Talks: Students will receive details about the book review and one-pager this week. The first genre is Mystery. Book Talk books need to be approved by the teacher before they are read. This is to be sure the book is at the student's independent reading level. Students will read a book, create a mini-poster, write a summary, and present the summary to the class as a speech. We will have five book talks this year. For a list of 5th grade mystery books, click on the link below. A 4th grade list is included, too.
Grammar: We begin our weekly grammar study. Students will have a quiz each Friday to assess understanding of weekly topics. They should review at home before the quiz.
Science/Social Studies
Students will spend time learning each of the five regions of the USA. They will be assessed on state location and capitals. Test dates are on the Power School Calendar.
